A surprising point of contention arose within the early Christian church in Jerusalem. They insisted followers adhere to Mosaic Law, including circumcision and kosher practices, essentially requiring converts to become Jews first. Paul, however, presented a different understanding: Gentiles could follow Christ without these prerequisites.

King George III called the American Revolution a 'Presbyterian rebellion' due to their belief in limited government. This context differs vastly from Paul's time, where we now have the freedom to participate directly in government.

During the 1800 election, rumors spread that Thomas Jefferson would outlaw religion. After his victory, a woman hid her family Bible with a neighbor, fearing confiscation. Her reasoning? 'You're a Jeffersonian, and no one will think to look for a Bible in your house.'

We're all in this together. Embracing the wisdom of Parker Palmer, the key is valuing others, seeking to understand before being understood, and holding life's tensions in a constructive way. Let's connect.

As a pastor, ministering to both the anxious and the angry is a profound challenge. How do we connect when what troubles one person fuels another's anger, and vice versa? This is a call for empathy and care within our communities.

We cannot ignore the poor or oppressed. Caring about poverty, war, and peace isn't just a suggestion; it's essential for our own values and has implications for everyone globally. Our values demand we care.

We can debate immigration policies, but we must always respect the essential human dignity of immigrants. Romans 13 should not justify denying basic human worth.

The policy of separating children from immigrant families during the first Trump administration sparked outrage. Attorney General Jeff Sessions even cited Romans 13 to justify it, but many believed protecting children was a more fundamental value.

Exploring Romans 11, we see God's expansive vision for how everyone fits into His plans for salvation. His gifts and calling are irrevocable, revealing a hope that transcends all.

There are just two Sundays left in our "Summer in Rome" series.

This Sunday we look at Romans 13:1-7, in which Paul urges the Christians in Rome to submit to the governing authorities. Keep in mind that the emperor at the time was Nero.

How can we follow Romans 13 in our own time? What about civil disobedience? How do we respond to Christian nationalists who argue that Romans 13 gives the government the right to enforce their particular understanding of Christianity?

And how can we talk respectfully about these issues in Church, especially when we have differing political views? If we say that the church shouldn't talk about these issues at all, then how do we care for those who are anxious or angry, knowing that the issues that make some of us anxious are the same ones that make others of us angry and vice versa?

Whatever your political leanings, I hope you can join us for a thoughtful and prayerful exploration of Romans 13 and what it means for us today.

Grace and Peace,

Pastor Jack
