I Corinthians 11:1, “Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.”

People say, “I am as good as any of the Christians I know.”
Use my example, and you’re probably right. By using any construct of morality you’ve imagined, I am sure you are correct. You can easily follow your standards. Proverbs 21:2. “Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the LORD pondereth the hearts.” DO NOT FOLLOW ANY PERSON EXCEPT THE PERSON OF JESUS. Otherwise, our flesh becomes our moral compass instead of God. Only Follow Jesus.

Matthew 3:2, “…Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

John the Baptist’s message was revolutionary. Religious leaders turned following God into a religion. Jewish “religion” taught that forgiveness only came through sacrifices in the temple. John taught everyone that forgiveness of sin was a matter of the heart. God’s word made flesh became the sacrifice that ends all sacrifices so that we can have forgiveness. Jesus has the power to forgive all sins. Do you want to be forgiven? Flip your narrative and follow Jesus. If you don’t, you’ll follow Satan and remain enslaved.

Matthew 3:2, “…Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

Scholars say Matthew’s intended audience were Jews. John the Baptist, who prepared the way for the Lord and preached repentance, is pointing to Jesus here, saying, " The kingdom of heaven is at hand.” John told the people that forgiveness of sin was a matter of the heart. Repentance is doing a 180 to follow Jesus instead of the Jewish religious system. It’s more than saying a prayer, being declared holy, or offering a sacrifice. We become New Creatures, longing to sacrifice our all for Christ.

Luke 2:7, “And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.”

Jesus, born a peasant and grew up to be King. However, this King flipped the Monarchy’s role. This king was a servant who was sacrificed for his subjects, instead of subjects being sacrificed in wars of the ruler’s making. The Jews expected a conquering warrior, but Jesus came to free us from slavery to sin and death. He actually came to save the Romans just as much as the Jews.

HEBREWS 10:3-4 (CEV) “But the blood of bulls and goats cannot take away sins. It only reminds people of their sins from one year to the next.”

Jesus wants us to turn a 180. flipping the narrative.” The New Testament highlights Jesus’ purpose of reshaping us. He lived a life that needed no repentance, so we could turn our backs on religion and live a life of repentance. Jesus flipped the storyline of religion, humanity, and how God actually expected us to interact with His creation. We do a 180 by completely following Jesus, who never needed to.

HEBREWS 10::1-4, “The Law of Moses is like a shadow of the good things to come. This shadow isn't the good things themselves, because it cannot free people from sin by the sacrifices offered year after year. If there were worshipers who already have their sins washed away and their consciences made clear, there would not be any need to go on offering sacrifices. But the blood of bulls and goats cannot take away sins. It only reminds people of their sins from one year to the next.”

Jesus flipped everything. We don’t follow religion. Repentance isn’t following something; it’s following someone.

Acts 2:38, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

Metanoeō, the Greek word translated “repent,” means to think differently. Peter is on the steps of the temple, looking over the Mikvas, where Jews were immersed for ceremonial cleansing. Seeing them reminds Paul that new converts become New Creatures immersed in the new way of thinking and transformed life. Turning away from sin and receiving God’s Holy Spirit is the gift of God’s love and grace.

Acts 2:37-39, “…what shall we do? Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”

Continually repent, think differently, and turn away from your former way of life. Be baptized in Jesus’ name, dying to your old life in that watery grave. Be raised as a new creature, following Christ.
