The Holy Spirit’s Role in Parenthood
If you are reading this blog post, there is a pretty good chance that you know who the Holy Spirit is. (If you don’t, feel free to reach out to one of the pastors at your church or me) The Holy Spirit is something that I believe every Christian knows exists. But do we know what the job of the Holy Spirit is and allowing Him to work through us. I think it is easy to forget about the Holy Spirit, especially when it comes to His role in parenthood.
Here is something that we have all heard at some point. “The answer to all of life’s problems can be found in the Bible.” This stamen is 100% true. No matter how big or how small, the answer for dealing with that situation can be found in the Bible. But when we look at the Bible, it often seems like we can’t find the answer. Here is why it often feels like we can’t find the answer. Its because we are not looking to the Holy Spirit for guidance.
In John15:5 it says, “I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in me and I in him produces much fruit, because you can do nothing without me.” Jesus is letting us know a critical piece of information that I think can easily be missed. Without Jesus, there with the disciples, there would be no fruit. Without Jesus, the disciples would have never been able to share the gospel. They would have never seen any spiritual fruit from their efforts. We tend to think ok great; I have accepted Jesus as the lord and savior of my life, and now I can produce fruit. That’s correct, but there is something else that allows us to produce the fruit, and that is the Holy Spirit
The Spirit is the one who lives inside of us. The Holy Spirit is the one that helps us to understand and read the Bible. The Holy Spirit is the one that is supposed to guide us. Listen to what Jesus says about the Spirit in John 16:7-8
“Nevertheless, I am telling you the truth. It is for your benefit that I go away because if I don’t go away, the Counselor will not come to you. If I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will convict the world about sin, righteousness, and judgment.”
Jesus views the Spirit as being more important than himself and tells us that it’s for our benefit that the Spirit comes inside of us. While we would all love to have Jesus beside us every step of the way, Jesus tells us that the Holy Spirit inside of us is more important. Here is how important the Holy Spirit is to Jesus in Luke 24:49. Right before Jesus is going to ascends to heaven, he tells them something important. His last command Jesus gave them was to “stay in the city until you are empowered from on high.” Jesus told the disciples that they needed to stay and wait for the Holy Spirit. They needed the Holy Spirit just like we need him.
Then the question of “what role does the Holy Spirit play in parenthood?” is answered. Without the Holy Spirit guiding us in how to raise our children, we will never see any spiritual fruit. While we as parents are to be the primary disciplers of our children, there is nothing that we can do to create spiritual growth. Instead, we must rely on the Holy Spirit to guide us as we work to lead our children. We should be sensitive to the Holy Spirit, constantly listing for Him to speak to us and show us what is next.
