It has never been easy to be a person of progressive faith, especially in a time when Christian Nationalist ideas are so pervasive and religious practice can be manipulated in service to power and greed. Even in these painful times, let us remain steadfast in our Unitarian Universalist identity, confident in our knowing that our covenantal faith and practices, grounded in shared values, offer so much of what is needed to minister to this beautiful and struggling world.

As a people of a freely chosen faith centered on love, what spiritual teachings keep us grounded in the work? What comforts us in times of struggle? What moves us to make room for others’ perspectives and experiences in our own understandings of life? Treasure those resources. Celebrate them for the spiritual development that they offer. Above all else, share them with each other, for we become more than we were when we journey together.

Dear Members and Friends,

We lost one of our great members today. Cheryl Conlee passed away this morning with her wife, Michaelene by her side and holding her hand. Cheryl was a tremendous leader and one of the most compassionate and generous human beings. The world will not be the same without her. Please hold Michaelene and all who loved her in your hearts. May those who share in our grief find comfort and may peace be with us all.

Tomorrow, Sunday, May 10, we will not have Soul Matters or a potluck but we will gather at 10:30 as a community in grief. This will not be a service but will be a time to simply be with one another. We will share a chalice lighting and short reading and then have time to talk with one another.

If you would like, you could write a note of care to Michaelene, share some of your memories of Cheryl, or sit quietly if that is what you need. You are welcome to bring some snacks to share if you would like. People may come and go as they wish.

A memorial for Cheryl will be planned at a later date that will be for the wider community. Tomorrow is for us.

With love, Rev. Sarah, Rev. Gail and the UUCO Board of Trustees.

Our dear past president and phenomenal leader, Cheryl Conlee has undergone extensive open-heart surgery recently in Nashville. With her wife Michaelene by her side through all of this, Cheryl has a long road to recovery. They both need the love and support of our congregation during this difficult time. UUCO is known for its advocacy and justice work in the community, leading the way to care for others. This moment is an opportunity to practice this care and comfort within our own community by extending some grace to Cheryl and Michaelene. You can read more about their story and share a bit of love and comfort to them by visiting the below link.

If you have questions or would like to offer other ways to help Cheryl and Michaelene, please feel free to reach out to me or the UUCO Board of Trustees. We thank you for your kindness and generosity.

With love at the center,
Rev. Sarah Osborne
