Lies are damaging. To those who hear them and believe them. And to those who spread them.

And while we expect to hear lies in many places, the last place we (should) expect to find them is in the church, whether from the pulpit or the Sunday School classroom.

These lies have the power to destroy people's confidence in the church, in pastors, and, yes, even God.

But some of the lies that are spread within the church often go unrecognized as such. They are accepted as truth about God and about the Bible, and people carry them with them for years. Even those who have found a way to recognize them for what they are carry the emotional and psychological pain that resulted from them for many years.

In our sermon series, "Lies the Preacher Told Me," we will be confronting some of these lies.

We hope you join us as we discover the power within our Methodist tradition to confront these lies and work toward a better way of living as a Christian in a world broken by sin, falsehood, injustice, corruption, and death.

Flood Response Shows We’re Stronger Together

Over the last several weeks, severe storms and torrential rains have caused multiple rounds of flooding across the southern and central portions of Ohio. Perry County in southeast Ohio was hit hardest, with the communities of Crooksville and Roseville bearing the worst of the damage. Hundreds of residents had to be evacuated from flooded homes, and emergency shelters remain open even now. Additional heavy rains in the following days led to more flooding in Perry County, as well as in Cincinnati, Columbus, and the surrounding counties. Other areas of the state, including Champaign, Clark, Madison, and Franklin counties, experienced tornadoes that led to power outages and downed trees.

In this same time, the Disaster Response Ministries of both the East and West Ohio Conferences have been working together to care for churches and communities. Our Conference Disaster Response Coordinators are staying updated on how government and voluntary organizations are responding. District administrators are connecting with local churches around flood damage, donation collections, and volunteers who are willing to help out when the time comes. Early Response Team training is being organized so that volunteers can be properly prepared to complete muck-outs and remove debris. Flood buckets are being delivered to homeowners who need cleaning supplies. A joint East-West Ohio team is being formed to respond once the flood waters have receded. And UMCOR has awarded the West Ohio Conference a $10,000 Solidarity Grant to support the recovery efforts.

If you or your congregation would like to get involved in responding to these events, please DO NOT SELF-DEPLOY. Going to these communities at this moment in time will only serve to burden an already-overwhelmed system. Instead, consider doing one or more of the following:

PRAY – Pray for disaster survivors as well as first responders, volunteers, community members, and local churches.
GIVE – Give to West Ohio Disaster Response ministries online or by check. Donations will go to help survivors of disasters or local churches affected by the flooding.
