Today the Church commemorates the Martyrs of Uganda, 45 converts to the Roman Catholic and Anglican faith that were executed between 1885 and 1887. It is a complicated story, involving s*x, power, and colonialism, but the fact remains that people were martyred for their faith. Some contemporary Chistians in this country claim they are being persecuted, when they are merely being inconvenienced or when they lose some power they once had. That false claim belittles the sacrifices of life and freedom that truly persecuted Christians have experienced.
