This spring, the 5th grade Maker Space class tried designing and then creating with 3D pens an object that would function as designed. Their assigned object was a bubble wand. The final projects varied greatly in design and a few proved not quite sturdy enough for repeated use, but everyone had fun testing them.

Mrs. Lammers’ 3rd grade finished their novel study of “Charlotte's Web” by E.B. White just before the end of the school year. Throughout the novel, the students participated in a variety of response and reflection activities, including group theme posters and character trait Post-it note posters. At the conclusion of the novel, the class celebrated with a Charlotte's Web Day. During this day, students rotated through cross-curricular centers of Charlotte's Web themed activities including brainstorming adjectives for the main characters, learning more about spiders and pigs, and elapsed time problems. Many students said this was their favorite novel of the school year!

As a culminating event for a month-long narrative writing unit, Miss Cascio’s 1st grade held a publishing party on the evening of May 27th. The students had been working throughout May on prewriting, rough drafts, finals drafts, and illustrations to produce their own books. At the party, they received certificates and then answered questions about their books. Family and friends could also scan a QR code to view the young authors reading their story, and then write notes of support and praise to the 1st grade authors.

During the end-of-the-year assembly, two members of the faculty were also acknowledged. Our junior high Mathematics and all grades Physical Education teacher, Mr. Ryan Schlitter, was recognized by the PTU for his above and beyond efforts and commitment to St. Brendan School. At the end of the assembly, Mr. De Luca and Miss Onacila presented our retiring junior high English Language Arts teacher, Mrs. Emily Sinclair, with a bouquet of flowers as a small token of appreciation for her dedication to the students of St. Brendan School.

Last Tuesday was St. Brendan School’s annual Spirit Day. The kindergarten through 7th grade students enjoyed a day outside filled with fun games and competitions organized by the 8th grade class and Mr. Schlitter. The PTU sponsored and served a hot dog lunch, and also brought in the Kona Ice truck for a refreshing treat at the end of the games. Thank you to the 8th grade for making this a fun day for the younger students, Mr. Schlitter for keeping it all running smoothly, and the PTU parents and St. Brendan alumni who helped with the classes and served lunch.
