We are a Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) congregation with a history reaching back to a founding date of April 24, 1884. As each generation of members have passed through the doors, the ministry has moved. The building was downtown at the turn of the century, but changed from its Fourth St. Vernon Road location following the fire of 1946. The life of the church has reflected Newark’s landsc

ape over the years. The edge of the city has now become close to its center. We continue to have several families in our membership whose forefather/mothers founded the congregation. Across generations, they have shared the faith with their children and the witness has grown. The spirit has expanded and the love has grown. We have shared in many lives as weddings/ baptisms/ graduations/ funerals appeared on their calendars and in their memories. The Christian life is a pilgrimage and we are on the journey together. There is place for you to find a home, friends on the journey of life and respite from the rush of daily living.

Featuring Retreat Leader the Rev. Dr. Christal Williams

Dr. Williams is a proud native of Cleveland, Ohio, whose prophetic voice proclaims God's love, grace, and reconciliation for all humanity. She embodies this message through her life's work as a pastoral pioneer, mentor, spiritual administrator, and intentional leader.

A graduate of the Cleveland School of the Performing Arts with a concentration on Vocal Music and Theory, Dr. Williams earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Jarvis Christian University in Hawkins, Texas, a Master of Divinity from Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis, Indiana, and a Doctor of Ministry from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio.

Ordained at Southport Christian Church in Indianapolis, Dr. Williams currently serves as the Regional Minister for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Indiana, where she made history as the first woman to hold this position.

Sometimes you see the same things so much that you don’t think much of it… it is just there. Then you take a moment and really look at it and it just reminds you of the Love of God. Such is this poem written by one of our incredibly talented members that I had a moment to really look at and read while in the Medical Loan Closet this morning. I was there for a quick moment waiting to assist a different member who had called asking if they could get something real quick to help a friend out who had just had an unplanned surgery.
