You know your own name, your own face, your own story, but do you know your own heart?
David did not assume he did. And he knew God better than almost anyone. That is exactly why he prayed:
"Search me, O God, and know my heart. Try me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting." Psalm 139:23–24 (NASB)
In your house, you know it pretty well. You know which floorboards creak. You know which doors stick. You know where the light switch is in the dark. This process took some time, but it has become second nature. The inside of your heart is very similar.
We have spent the last several weeks laying out the blueprint together. We have talked about walking in the light, about prayer, about hearing God's voice, about being rooted so deeply in Him that nothing can shake you loose, but there is one more layer — not above all of that, but beneath it. A room at the very center of the house that a lot of us have quietly locked from the inside and told ourselves no one needs to enter.
Psalm 139 begins where so many of us are afraid to start: with the God who already knows everything, asking Him to show us what we cannot see on our own.
To understand the weight of these two verses, you have to feel the whole psalm underneath them. David does not arrive at "Search me, O God" quickly. He spends twenty-two verses meditating on who God is before he ever asks God to look inside him.
He writes that God knows when he sits down and when he rises. He knows David's thoughts before they are formed. He knows his words before they reach his lips. He has hemmed him in — behind and before — and His hand is always upon him. There is nowhere David can go that God is not already there.
And then — only after all of that — David prays: "Search me."
In the Hebrew, this prayer is built out of four precise and powerful verbs — and each one goes a little further than the one before it.
Search me — (חָקַר) — chaqar. To probe. To investigate. To fathom. This is the word used for mining deep into the earth to find something hidden. David is not asking God to glance at him. He is asking God to excavate. And here is the remarkable thing: this is the same word used in verse one — "You have searched me and known me." The psalm begins with that as a statement of fact, and ends with it as a prayer of invitation. God was always going to search. David is choosing to invite it.
Try me — ( בחני) — bachan. To test. To prove. To throw into the fire and see what comes out. This is the word of the refiner's crucible — the heat that removes the impurities you could not see before the flame. David is not asking for comfort here. He is asking to be put to the test by the one who knows exactly how much pressure is needed to reveal what is real, and exactly how much trust he can bear.
Know my anxious thoughts. The word for anxious here — sar'aph ( שַׂרְעַפָּי ) — refers to scattered, branching, unsettled thinking. The kind of mind that cannot be still. The thoughts that surface at two in the morning, or in a quiet moment when you were not expecting them. David is not hiding his mental state from God. He is presenting it. Here is my worry. Here is what I cannot resolve. I give it to you.
Lead me —( וּ֝נְחֵ֗נִי ) nachah. To guide. To es**rt. To transport through unfamiliar territory. This is the word of the shepherd and the colonist and the guide who walks ahead of you into the unknown. Notice that the prayer does not end with the examination. The examination is not the destination. The leading is. God does not search us in order to condemn us. He searches us in order to lead us somewhere we could not get to on our own.
That phrase at the end — "lead me in the way everlasting" — carries more weight than it first appears. In Hebrew, (דֶּרֶךְ עוֹלָם) — derech olam is a manner of living. An orientation of the whole person. The ancient way — the way of those who have surrendered the defense of themselves to God and simply follow where He leads.
Proverbs 21:2 puts it plainly: every person's way is right in their own eyes, but the Lord examines the hearts. We are all, by nature, convinced that we see ourselves clearly. We justify. We reframe. We tell ourselves a version of our own story that always casts us in a favorable light. The way everlasting is the path that runs directly through the end of all of that. It begins at the moment you stop needing to be right in your own eyes and simply ask God to show you what He sees.
David understood this better than most. He was, after all, "a man after God's own heart" — but not because he never sinned, and not because his motives were always pure. He earned that description because when God searched him, he did not run. He turned toward the examination. He prayed for it. He made it a habit of his soul.
That is the posture available to you today. Not perfection. Not having all your motives sorted out before you approach God. Just the quiet courage to say: Search me. Try me. Know what I cannot know about myself. And lead me somewhere I could not get on my own.

Lord, we have spent time learning to walk in the light, to pray, to hear You, to be rooted in You. Now we come to the deeper place — the interior rooms we have kept quiet and locked. We confess that we are not always sure what is in us. We do not always trust what we find when we look. So we ask what David asked: search us. Try us. Know the anxious thoughts we carry. See what is in us that does not belong on the way everlasting — and then, God, lead us. Not to a verdict, but to a path. Not to condemnation, but to life. Amen.
