God of our weary years, God of our silent years;
Thou who has brought us this far along the way…
Today we remember …
Life before the Hurricane
The ones who are no longer with us
The stintch of death and devastation in the air
The struggle to put life back together
The feeling of utter hopelessness
Even still
We give You thanks for every neighbor who rescued a neighbor, every church that opened its doors, every volunteer who served, every family that shared what little they had, and every person who somehow found the strength to begin again.
Yet, God, do not allow our celebration of resilience to cause us to ignore the wounds that remain.
Where people are still hurting, comfort us.
Where trauma exist, heal us.
Where communities still carry the scars of displacement, transform us.
Where the spirit of inequality determined who could evacuate, who could rebuild, and who could return still remain, convict us.
Where the invaluable fabric of our culture have been washed, restore us.
21 years later, we thank you, Lord, for life after Hurricane Katrina.
Amen and Ashe’
