Jesus Speaks 📣
Matthew 7:21-23 (KJV) warns that outward religious acts and invoking Jesus’ name do not guarantee salvation.
Jesus declares that true entry into the kingdom of heaven requires doing the will of the Father, and that He will reject those who practice "lawlessness" despite their impressive spiritual resumes.
These verses, spoken at the end of the Sermon on the Mount, provide a sobering look at false faith and judgment.
"Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord..." (v. 21): Simply professing faith with your words or calling Jesus "Lord" is not enough. Genuine faith requires aligning your life with God's will, which fundamentally means trusting in Christ for salvation.
"Have we not prophesied... and cast out devils... and done many wonderful works?" (v. 22): These individuals will argue their case on Judgment Day based on their impressive religious achievements. They claim to have performed miracles and done mighty works all in Jesus' name.
"I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity" (v. 23): "Never knew you" highlights the absence of an authentic, intimate, personal relationship with Jesus. Even though their works appeared outwardly religious, Jesus exposes their hearts as being defined by "iniquity" (sin or lawlessness).
