ANI ADONAI

While it is natural during this week's Torah portion to focus upon the details of God's appointed times, and of Sukkot in particular, it's easy to overlook a very key section of the portion which serves as a sort of preamble to this reading which begins with God's command that, when an animal is born from among either the flock or the herd, that animal must not be offered as a sacrifice right away. It must be allowed to remain with its mother for a prescribed period of time.

And even when that animal becomes eligible for sacrifice, it is an offense to God to sacrifice both the mother and its young on the same day. This is very much akin to another of the Lord's commands not to boil a baby goat in its mother's milk, (a command that actually appears three separate times within the Torah). The injuction against both the above scenarios is for the very same reason - justice.

Some things are simply wrong. They are abhorrent and unjust upon the very face of them, and here, even when it comes to an animal that is sacrificed, the Lord displays His heart of mercy. The Lord commands that even the remains of such a sacrifice must be treated with proper attention.

God is so emphatic regarding His command to exercise compassion and mercy that He indicates that not to do so is tantamount to profaning His holy name. And within just the last three verses of Leviticus Chapter 22 where this command is detailed, God solemnizes His command FOUR times saying, "Ani Adonai" - "I AM THE LORD".

The remainder of the Torah portion after this gives instruction regarding the various holy days all throughout the year, and it doesn't even mention God's declaration of identification until the very end - with one notable exception that occurs in Leviticus 23 verse 22 where He says...

"When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap to the very corners of your field, nor gather the gleaning of your harvest; you are to leave them for the needy and the stranger, I AM THE LORD your God."

How very revealing that once again, we see that when it comes to how we treat others, God is very intentional in His command that we see our fellow man as possessing inherent value and dignity, regardless of who they are or what their monetary worth or social standing might be. God calls us to be an expression and extension of His heart of love, mercy and compassion toward all people and He places the weight of His very name as a seal upon this command.

Which is why the preamble passage of this week's Torah portion proclaims,

"And you shall not profane My holy name; but I am to be sanctified among the children of Israel, for I AM THE LORD who sanctifies YOU".

How we treat the unloved and the unlovely among us determines if we truly love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul and strength. אני יהוה - I AM THE LORD.

Yom Kippur Synagogue shoot-out in a small city bordering New York State

Norm Weddum, president of the congregation at Sons of Jacob synagogue, who was inside at the time of the shooting, said a “firefight started and all hell broke loose” outside the building in the east end of Belleville. He said there were some teenagers but no small children inside the building at the time.

“We’re traumatized,” he said.

He said the officer, who was shot, was stationed outside the synagogue in an unmarked police cruiser.

He said if the officer was not stationed there at the time, “it would’ve been a different outcome, that’s for sure and I probably wouldn’t be standing here talking to you.”

He said the officer was sitting inside a black pickup truck that was parked on the driveway of the synagogue. The Star observed that the right passenger side of the truck was riddled with bullets.

“He was on duty for us,” he said. “We had made arrangements with the police for them, which we normally would do for any type of event.”

He said he had a brief conversation with the officer stationed outside, shortly before 7 p.m., before heading inside to join the congregation.

“I went and said hello and thanked him for coming,” said of his conversation with the officer.

He said at about 7 p.m., “we were trying to get everybody in to start the service. At that point, the first shots were fired — bang, bang, bang.”

He said at first it was unclear what was causing the loud explosion coming from outside the building.

“Then it happened again: bang, bang, bang.”

He said a few of the members including himself went to the lobby of the building to see if they could observe what was happening. That’s when another round of gunshots was heard, he said.

“We rushed back into the auditorium,” he said of efforts to take cover. “I closed the doors behind me, because I didn’t want to be a visual target.”

“I yelled, ‘everyone hit the floor, get on the floor immediately, those are gunshots,’ which is what everyone did.”

He said several people were on their phones seeking help from police.

“There wasn’t panic or anything, and there wasn’t screaming,” he said of the congregation maintaining some degree of composure.

He said the members started taking cover.

“We’re all on the floor” he said. “At this point, gunfire is continuing.”

He said several of the bullets struck the building, piercing several windows.

“If you look through the stained-glass windows, there’s about 20 bullet holes in one of them,” he said.

He said after things had calmed down, “ I was able to look out the door, and I saw there was a huge police presence at that point in time, and I saw two officers attending to the one (officer) that got shot.”

“I did see them put him in an ambulance and they sent him off. And then a second ambulance came and took away the shooter,” he added.

Weddum said, “It shouldn’t be happening in Belleville. It shouldn’t be happening anywhere for that matter.”
