Holy Trinity Church - Episcopal: Historic Faith for Modern People

Holy Trinity Church - Episcopal: Historic Faith for Modern People Trinity Church seeks the expansion of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and service to our community.

We uphold the classical, traditional understanding of Christian faith and order as expressed in the historic Creeds and the Book of Common Prayer. We are committed to confessing Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, and to following Him, by the grace of the Holy Spirit, conforming our lives to his example and teaching as set forth in Holy Scripture. We promise to warmly extend the welcome of the Church and the saving Gospel of Jesus Christ to all people.

If you’ve been looking for a way to quiet the noise and find a bit of stillness in your day, you might enjoy the ancient practice of Lectio Divina. Unlike our usual way of reading—where we rush to finish a page or hunt for specific facts for Bible study—this "divine reading" is all about slowing down to hear what resonates in the heart. It’s a rhythmic, four-step process of reading a short text slowly, reflecting on a single word that stands out, responding with your own thoughts or prayers, and finally just resting in the contemplative silence that follows.

The beauty of this practice is that it doesn’t require a degree or a specific setting; it’s simply an invitation to move from the head to the heart. By taking a few minutes to chew on a phrase rather than rushing through a chapter, you create a small sanctuary of peace in a fast-paced world. It turns a simple text into a conversation and a moment of deep, personal connection.

Please join us downstairs in the library of Holy Trinity located at 202 High St, Nevada City. Come as you are! No prior knowledge or experience is necessary.

Compline
Sunday, May 3rd, 7 p.m. the male quartet Renaissance Man will chant a harmonized COMPLINE.
Wrapping up the Easter Season, Robbie, Caleb, Jody and Jeff will chant an Orthodox Byzantine chant to open the program.
More program: “Christians, to the Pascal victim”; Psalm 23 by my mentor Peter Hallock; S. Wesley’s Nunc dimittis; and R. Stone’s Lord’s Prayer. The end of the program will be the mighty Te Deum laudamus in a Slavonic setting by M. Martens.
Our full candle array will be in evidence (I believe the count is 112) and with the later sunset, you will actually be able to read the printed program for the who and what.
Our harmonized Compline is a one-of-a-kind in California.
This 24 minute chanted prayer service will help soothe the savage beast in all of us.
There is no offering; no sermon; and very little listener participation.
See you there; bring a friend who needs an analog break from their personal device. Can’t make it? Get in the stream a few minutes before 7 p.m.

“I read in a book that a man called Christ went about doing good. It distresses me that I am so easily satisfied with just going about.” - Toyohiko Kagawa (1888-1960), Renewer of Society

Toyohiko Kagawa was an Evangelical Christian activitist, author, and social reformer. He was orphaned as a young child and lived with extended family and, later, American missionaries. He converted to Christianity as a child after enrolling in a Bible class. Kagawa studied theology in Japan at Kobe Theological Seminary and moved into a slum to work as a missionary. In 1914, he journeyed to America to study theology and science at Princeton. Upon return to Japan, Kagawa advocated for the poor, worked for universal male and female suffrage, became a labor activist, and helped organize relief efforts for earthquake victims in Tokyo. He established hospitals, churches, schools, credit unions, and spoke of the necessity of Christian principles in the ordering of society. In all of his work, he preached the Gospel of Jesus Christ, even while Japan descended into Emperor-system fascism in the years preceeding World War II. In 1940, Kagawa was arrested after establishing an Anti-War League and making a public apology for Japan’s brutal occupation of China. After his release, he traveled to the United States in an effort to prevent war with Japan. He was selected after the war as an adviser to the transitional Japanese government and criticized the use of atomic weapons as a devastating tragedy and violation of justice. Kagawa authored over 150 books on theology and societal renewal. Despite his relative obscurity today, in his lifetime Kagawa was numbered with Bonhoeffer as one of the most significant Christian thinkers of his generation.

Strengthen and protect, O God, all those who suffer for their fidelity to Jesus Christ; that, like your servant Toyohiko Kagawa, they might persevere in seeking and serving Christ in all persons, and work tirelessly for the advancement of your kingdom, through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom with you and the Holy Spirit be all honor and glory now and forever. Amen.
