Wow…Sunday was awesome! 9 people were baptized! If you were one of them, we’re cheering you on, and believe God’s best is ahead for you as you take next steps in obedience.

This Sunday, we’re going to continue our series, “Woes: Confronting False Religion,” by exposing dead religion.

When some people think about church they think, “It’s a straitjacket.” Killjoy. Removes all the fun and simply makes people feel guilty about themselves. Why would I want to be a part of that?

Whether this is your perspective on church or not, we all know what it’s like to walk into a “dead” culture. Workplace that has toxic power mongering, back-stabbers, or toxic passive-aggressive water-cooler conversations. Or the family culture that’s negative, demanding, quick to accuse, or full of resentment.

A toxic culture produces death.

If we’re not careful, we can all contribute to this. So, what does it look like for us to build and contribute to a faith movement that’s fully alive?

Pastor Tim Keller defined radical humility not as thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less. When you're freed by what God has done, you can truly give yourself to others.

Starting a church meant 10 years of training. I thought my degrees mattered. Instead, they put me on the setup and teardown team, showing up at 6 AM. It was the best preparation imaginable, teaching me the true ministry is loving people and doing whatever it takes to connect someone to Christ. My audience shaped my heart.

Madonna's raw confession reveals a relentless drive fueled by the fear of mediocrity. Even at the height of fame, the struggle to prove oneself never ends. Living for external validation leads to perpetual exhaustion and feeling inadequate.

He thought God was offering an escape from a grueling T-shirt factory job. Instead, God revealed that true pastoral calling meant finding God's heart for the very people he was trying to leave behind. Greatness isn't about climbing, but about serving.

Blaise Pascal said the human heart has a God-shaped vacuum. We crave validation, but often trade God's radical love for the approval of others. Jesus asked, 'How can you believe when you receive glory from one another and don't seek the glory that comes from the only God?' If we're living for the approval of many, we may be missing out on God's love. What recognition do you desperately seek? Are you devastated by criticism or over-inflated by praise? The audience you live for shapes who you become.

Are you trading the audience of many for the audience of one? Jesus reminds us we have one Teacher, one Father, one Lord. His attention matters most. In a culture that craves external validation, His quiet voice speaks to your soul.
