John the Baptist was the most famous religious figure in Israel among ordinary people.

And the moment Jesus walked by, he turned his disciples away from himself.

Because faithful witness was never about him. If we bring our ego to people, we bring death. If we bring Jesus, we bring life.

The Lord’s Work. His Church. His Glory.

Two of John the Baptist's disciples heard the declaration.

"Behold the Lamb of God."

And they left John to follow Jesus.

When Jesus noticed them following, he did not wait. He turned and asked: "What do you seek?" Not casual small talk. A searching question from the one who already knows the heart.

They did not have the words for a full Christology. They just wanted to be near him. So he gave them the simplest and most generous answer possible: "Come and you will see."

They came. They saw. They stayed with him all day. And everything changed.

Andrew walked away from that day and did one thing: he found his brother Simon and said, "We have found the Messiah."

He did not wait until he had the right words or a polished system. He simply testified to what he had found and brought his brother into the presence of the Promised One.

Saving faith does not remain silent. It does not stand still. When a sinner has truly tasted the goodness of the Lamb, the natural response is to bring others in. What else would we do?

Jesus looked at Simon. And renamed him. You are Simon, son of John. You shall be called Cephas, which is Peter. Rock.

This impulsive fisherman would become, by God's sovereign grace, a foundational leader in the church. And it all began with a faithful word, a personal invitation, and a brother's concern.

The same grace is still at work today.

Salvation is of the Lord.

You cannot save yourself. You cannot make yourself more favorable to God. You are a sinner dead in trespasses and sins.

But look to Christ. He is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

That is the gospel.

Not only has your record been wiped clean.

You have been given a whole new past.

The perfect record of Christ, who kept God's law perfectly, has been accredited to those who believe. In the eyes of God, you are now dressed in his righteousness.

Your record is clean.

Your assurance does not rest upon your feelings.

Did you hear that? Your assurance does not rest upon your feelings. Or your perfect obedience.

It rests on the perfect life and perfect work of the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.

Christ has taken away your sins. If that is true, then you are free from condemnation. The demands of the law have been met. God's wrath has been satisfied, appeased forever.

Rest in that.

John's final word in this passage is simple, but profound.

"I myself have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God."

The Lamb of God is the Son of God. The eternal Son. God in human flesh.

All true Christian confession rests here. Jesus is the unique, eternal Son of God with power to save, to sanctify, and to one day glorify his people.

Behold.

John the Baptist did not say glance at the Lamb of God. He said behold.

The command is not merely to notice. It is to fix your eyes on Christ. To look away from yourself, away from your feelings, away from your own record, and look to him.

In an age of distraction, self-help religion, and moralism, the church must keep doing one thing: pointing to the Messiah, the Lamb of God, crucified and risen from the dead.
