This summer we’ll spend 10 weeks preaching from Proverbs 30 in a series called “Wisdom in Plain Sight.” Though you may know that Proverbs is a book of important wisdom from God, Proverbs 30 is a lesser known, easy-to-overlook place in this well-known book.
Many of us could summarize Proverbs 31, for instance, about the virtuous woman but know almost nothing about Agur and what this unfamiliar man has to say.
Yet this chapter offers a rich collection of observations, prayers, warnings, and humble confessions that speak with surprising clarity and insight into our everyday life. Agur’s sayings remind us that godly wisdom, God’s wisdom, is not complicated or hard to find, but it is often simple, steady, and sitting right in front of us. These proverbs will help us slow down, acknowledge our limits, trust God’s Word, and pay attention to the ordinary patterns and principles of everyday life where God has placed us.
Throughout the series we’ll consider themes such as knowing what you don’t know, contentment, humility, hard work, and living with dignity. These are not topics we often explore on Sunday morning, yet they shape the way we live, speak, work, and relate to one another every day. Proverbs 30 uses small animals, everyday experiences, and honest self reflection to teach us wisdom that we all deeply need.
Our hope is that this series will refresh us by bringing us back to the basics, the kind of wisdom that strengthens homes, deepens faith, and steadies our path as we take our next steps in following Christ. We also hope that this series will help make our Sunday mornings enjoyable and something we all look forward to as we soak in the summer months ahead. Together, may the Lord help us see and embrace the clear and basic wisdom he has placed in plain sight all around us.
