In 998/999, the Patriarch of Antioch John III Polites answered a letter from a fellow bishop on the communion of infants. Anticipating a key difference between Eastern and Western Christians, as well as some of the theology of the Protestant Reformation, he affirmed the historical practice of nourishing infants with the body and blood of Christ.
