The text for the Sermon on Sunday is 1 Corinthians 7: 1-16. The Apostle Paul is answering questions the disciples at Corinth had written to him. The questions were about marriage and divorce and Paul gives practical answers. Answers that come from the perspective of a disciple who is trying to keep the new commandment that Christ gives us, to love one another (John 13: 34-35).

Almost 2,000 years have passed since Paul wrote to the Corinthian disciples. The clothes change, the language changes but the problems remain the same. The advice Paul gave the disciples then is good for today.

You are Bought with a Price

The text for the sermon this Sunday is I Corinthians 6: 12 - 20. The key verse is the last one, verse 20. “For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit which are God’s. The entire passage starts with “All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful…”

Every passage of scripture must be read in context. Paul is writing a tough letter to the disciples in Corinth. The message hard because he loves them as the brothers and sisters in Christ that they are. They and we have liberty in Christ. He has paid the price for our sins and has liberated us from the penalty we earned for our sin.

We do not live under the law, the 10 commandments, in that we don’t keep the commandments to be right with God. We try to keep the commandments because we love God who first loved us and we want to obey Him. When we sin it grieves us because we love God. When we sin against a brother or sister that grieves us because we love one another. When a brother or sister sins against us, that should grieve us because they are sinning and we love them despite their sin

When we sin God the Holy Spirit convicts us and wants us to repent and Christ has already paid for it with His life. We will look deeper into this on Sunday.
