“ It's worth noticing sometimes what Jesus doesn't say. He doesn't say those who earn their worth, nor does he say those who demonstrate that they had worth. What does he say? The word that Jesus uses here to help can actually help us to understand what he means. A single word in Greek is translated as that whole phrase, “those who are considered worthy.”
And let me ask you, who is measuring whether or not a soul is considered worthy of eternal life? God and God has freely shown us the ruler that he will measure us by, the scales upon which he will weigh us. It's not the Joneses, it's not even how well you read your Bibles. It's not how well you lived the Christian life. It's not how much you improved. I'll be honest, a lot of times I'm hoping that judgment day is gonna be graded on a curve, right? Lord, I did a little bit better than this person. So that's something right. Well, no.
The measure that God uses in his judgment of all of creation is himself. His holiness, his goodness, his selflessness, his self-control, his purity, his perfection, his kindness, his patience, his gentleness, all of that. That is the measure of what is holy and what is not holy. That is the measure of what is worthy and what is unworthy.
That's what it would take for us to earn worthiness, but we can't. None of us have been able to do that. There's still some unnamed enemy that pulls us away from the grace that is beckoning us to the cross.
What does it mean to be counted worthy? It means to be like God. And so in his answer, he doesn't just give them straightforwardness, he also gives them depth so that today, you and I, when we are faced with the reality that we are not worthy, we can find hope.” -Pastor Seth
