She grew up in church knowing Jesus, but as she got older, she noticed a painful gap between the love Christians talked about and the way some people around her were treated. Some of her friends had been hurt by the church, and as she put it: “seeing their hurt, hurt me.” Sarai did not want her friends to think she was like those who had wounded them, so her faith grew quieter.
By early college, Sarai started rethinking much of what she had been taught. That season brought questions, confusion, and moments of feeling lost, but by God’s grace, her questions led her back to Scripture and prayer. During Covid quarantine, she immersed herself in scripture, and the Lord began reshaping her view of Him.
She discovered that the gospel was not rooted in fear, pressure, or legalism... but rather, in love.
“It’s not constriction... It’s something that frees you.”
That truth reflected what 1 John 4:18 had been saying all along: “perfect love casts out fear.” Jesus welcomed sinners, cared for the vulnerable, and loved us enough to give himself for us. For Sarai, this was a picture of fearless love, and it was a story worth sharing.
After a six-month mission in the Philippines, Sarai returned home to McKinney and felt the tension many young adults experience after college: What now? Where do I belong? Where is my community?
Young Adults at CF became one way God continued to meet her in community. It did not erase the hurt she had seen, but it gave her a steady place to keep walking with Jesus alongside others.
After six months of living a completely different rhythm, Sarai said that “having this community and having that consistency was really good for me.”
Through Young Adults, Sarai found a place to get plugged back in, begin leading, and experience a steady community that echoed what God had already been teaching her through Scripture: that His people are imperfect, but His grace is still at work among them.
Sarai’s story is a reminder that questions don’t have to lead us away from Jesus. When we seek Him, He is faithful to meet us (Matthew 7:7) and surrounds us with people who can help us keep walking with Him.
