# Charles Darwin, Racial Hierarchies, and the Biblical Truth of Human Equality
**Can scientific achievement excuse racial prejudice?**
Charles Darwin is celebrated for his contributions to modern science, particularly his 1859 book, *On the Origin of Species*. Yet his writings also reveal racial assumptions that deserve serious historical examination.
In *The Descent of Man* (1871), Darwin wrote:
> "the civilised races of man will almost certainly exterminate, and replace, the savage races throughout the world."
(Darwin, 1871, Vol. 1, Chapter VI, pp. 200–201)
Darwin also discussed human populations within a framework that reflected nineteenth-century European racial hierarchies.
To be historically accurate, Darwin opposed slavery and believed humanity shared a common ancestry. Nevertheless, opposing slavery does not automatically eliminate racial prejudice.
**Scientific accomplishment does not make a person morally infallible.**
The complete title of Darwin's 1859 book included the phrase "Preservation of Favoured Races," although the word "races" primarily referred to biological varieties of plants and animals. His later writings provide clearer evidence of prejudicial racial assumptions.
# # # What Does the Bible Say?
**Genesis 1:27 (KJV)** declares:
> "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them."
**Acts 17:26 (KJV)** affirms:
> "And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth"
Scripture does not assign greater human worth based on race, ancestry, nationality, or skin color.
Furthermore, **James 2:1–9** condemns favoritism and partiality, while **Revelation 7:9** presents people from every nation, kindred, people, and tongue standing before God's throne.
These biblical principles challenge every ideology that attempts to rank human worth according to racial classifications.
# # # The Greater Lesson
We can acknowledge Darwin's scientific contributions while critically examining his racial prejudices. His personal prejudices do not, by themselves, invalidate evolutionary biology, but neither should his scientific achievements shield his writings from moral scrutiny.
Christians must also acknowledge the historical failures of those who used Scripture to justify slavery and discrimination. Biblical truth must be applied consistently.
**The value of a human being is not determined by scientific classifications, social standing, ethnicity, or human opinion.**
**Our worth begins with the Creator, because every human being is made in the image of God.**
That is the biblical foundation for rejecting racial superiority and defending the dignity of all people.
