Murder, death, destruction—these are Satan’s chief means of separating humans from God. Can’t you see his work all around you? . . . We’ve been enslaved by the power of the evil one, the murderer of all murderers.
But look here: if Satan can’t kill you immediately, he has other tools at his disposal. He’ll imprison you in your own desires or use your intellect against you until you go down to death. Drugs, alcohol, illicit s*x, greed, false beliefs (like “God is dead”)—these are among the tools Satan uses to keep us in bo***ge, to keep us from experiencing the freedom of God’s kingdom before we take our last breath. Paul is clear about the tools of Satan, the tools he calls “the works of the flesh”. . . .
Scripture is likewise clear about the primary influencer of our works of the flesh, our sins. As John wrote, “He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning” (1 John 3:8a,). And his temptations toward sin aren’t just random or willy-nilly. He operates a highly-organized crime syndicate, a ring of demons whose only goal is to pull us toward desire, and ultimately, destruction. As Paul reminds us, “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” Eph. 6:12
Look around. . . . Don’t you see Satan’s influence at work around you? The entertainment industry mocks religion and celebrates perversity. Universities teach the death of God and Satan with scientific precision. Physicians and psychologists tell us that when we die, the lights go out forever. Sin, the works of our flesh—can there be any question that Satan is alive and well in our country? And when you remove Christ from the public square, from courthouses and schools, when you bar truth from its institutions, should it come as a surprise that the Devil steps in to fill the void?

*Think of the last time you tried to comfort someone who was hurting. What did you do right? What did you do wrong?

*What will you do differently next time?

One way God comforts hurting people is to put caring friends in their lives. And if we’re following God, one day we’ll be one of those caring friends. The apostle Paul says, “Praise be to . . . the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God” (2 Corinthians 1:3 – 4). God uses our experiences to reach out to others with compassion and comfort. Here are some tips to keep in mind when talking with someone who is hurting:

*Ask God to guide you before you speak. He will give you the right words to say.

*Give your hurting friend a chance to share their feelings. Listen closely and ask questions. Don’t try to correct anything the person says.

*Don’t use clichés or try to give simple answers. Instead, talk about how much you care about your friend.

*Pray with your friend.

*Ask if you can do simple things, like chores or errands, to make your friend’s life a little easier.

Then they sat down on the ground with him for seven days and seven nights with no one speaking a word to him, for they saw that his pain was very great.”

We can spend our entire lives trying to quench the thirst within, but we never seem to get there. Like the song, “I can’t get no, satisfaction...and I tried, and I tried...” How do you satisfy the eternal heart and mind of one made in God’s image with temporal things? What in this world made of dust can quench that spiritual thirst inside of us?
Solomon the wise, who was far more prosperous than any person in history, said, “The eye is not satisfied with seeing, Nor the ear filled with hearing,” in Ecclesiastes 1:8. He also reminded us, “All is vanity!”
We dwell in the world of vain hopes, tortured by the demons of “if only!” Oh, if only I had that job, that income, that spouse, that position— then I’d be perfectly happy! That empty hope drives many to keep chasing what they wrongly trust will satisfy. Unfortunately, many discover that this life’s stuff is meaningless only after they have devoted their entire lives to worldly pursuits. It will never be enough!
Get your eyes on things that are eternal because that is enough! Draw from the wells of salvation. Draw from that rich experience the Lord can give you through Him and in knowing Him!

“Therefore you will joyously draw water From the springs of salvation. And in that day you will say, “Give thanks to the Lord, call on His name. Make known His deeds among the peoples; Make them remember that His name is exalted.””

When you’re walking through difficulty and suffering, it’s easy to feel as though God has forgotten about you. However, that is a lie.

God kept His promise of the first coming of Jesus. Just like the Old Testament saints were eagerly waiting for the first coming, we as New Testament saints are eagerly awaiting His second coming. In fact, there are more prophecies in the Scriptures about Jesus’ second coming than there are about His first.

What great hope this provides. He remembers you. He knows your struggles, your suffering, and your sadness. He knows when you feel forgotten and He still loves you and remembers you. His promise to you is that your suffering will have an expiration date. The way things are now is not the way they will always be. He is coming back because He remembers you.

However, His second coming will look drastically different from His first:

The first time Jesus came to earth, He came as a baby. When He comes back, He will come as a full-grown king.

The first time Jesus came to earth, He came in weakness and meekness. When He comes back, He will come in power and glory.

The first time Jesus came to earth, He came as a suffering servant. When He comes back, He will come as a conquering master.

The first time Jesus came to earth very few people in a town called Bethlehem knew about it. When He comes back, everyone on earth will know who He is.

The first time Jesus came to earth, only a few wise men bowed down before Him. When He comes back, every knee will bow down before Him.

There will, however, be a few similarities:

The first time Jesus came to earth, He came because He loves you. When He comes back, He will come because He loves you.

The first time Jesus came to earth, He came because He remembered you. When He comes back, He will come because He remembers you.

Jesus has not forgotten you. He remembers you. Your suffering has an expiration date.

“For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord.”

Samuel Johnson, an 18th century writer said, “People need to be reminded more often than they need to be instructed.” Learning new things keeps us sharp and helps us improve ourselves. But, there is so much that we already have learned but just don’t either apply or remember. One of those things we need to remember is just how near God is to us. Here’s some hope-filled truth to remember:

There’s never a place we can go where His presence won’t be there first. He’s in our yesterday, He’s in our today, and He’s in our tomorrow all at the same time. He rejoices over us, rewards us, blesses us, and smothers us with His forgiveness and grace every day, throughout the day. In addition to the good, there is no tragedy we’ll face, no hardship we’ll endure, and no adversity we’ll encounter where God is not with us, steadily holding us up with His mighty, righteous, and perfect right hand.

When you feel lonely and wonder where God is, know that He is about you, above you, after you, amidst you, around you, among you, before you, behind you, beneath you, beside you, beyond you, by you, for you, inside you, near you, and over you. He is everywhere, all the time. Always and forever, He is near us.

When you experience fear and wonder why God won’t remove it from you, know that He hasn’t given you a spirit of fear, but of love, power, and a sound mind. That nothing can separate us from His love and presence. Always and forever, He is near us.

When you’re sick and don’t understand why God won’t heal you, know that He is still the Great Physician and Jehovah-Rapha, the God who heals. The time frame you have in mind may not match His, but rest assured, He is doing a work in you and through you. Always and forever, He is near us.

There is nothing that we’ll encounter that God has not already defeated. And not just defeated, but totally annihilated on our behalf when He put Jesus on the cross to cover our past, present, and future sins. Always and forever, He is near us.

When you go through devastating situations, He is with you.
When your life seems to be spinning out of control, He is with you.
When you can’t see the path or even the next step, He is with you.

There are options everywhere that beg us to place our trust, hope, and joy in them. Those temporary joys and pleasures hold no comparison to the eternal, never-ending presence of our Almighty God who calls us His children. His presence is the prize. It’s what we get for all eternity.

“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written: “For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.” No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

To pray like Jesus means living a prayerful life, where prayer is a constant and recurring habit like breathing, in our life lived in the Spirit. So we get out of bed and pray. We eat breakfast and pray. We get in the shower and pray. We get in the car and pray. We go to work and pray. We go shopping and pray. We study and pray. We clean out the garage and pray. Every day and in all facets of our day, we have the great privilege of getting to talk to our Father.

Spend some time in prayer today, thanking Jesus that he intercedes for you, and brings your prayers to the Father.

Rejoice always; pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.
