SARAH ASKS: Is the faith you are running on firsthand or secondhand?

It’s divinely imparted faith. Romans 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Is a particular verse in the Bible suppose to have the same meaning to every reader or is the reader permitted to draw his own opinion on the verse's meaning? For instance, does John 3:16 have only one meaning or are there various interpretations?

God’s Word is unique in that it is alive as He speaks it to us even through the written page. He may use the same teaching to convey various lessons to people yet they all complement each other without contradiction. The overall message of Scripture does not change with various forms of expressing it. Man might change a verse’s meaning with his words but the truth of the Word he bases it on remains the unchanged.

ANONYMOIUS ASKS: Why do some pastors say that the song " Sinner Saved by Grace is not biblical?

Many songs we sing in church contain a phrase that might be unsound theology if taken alone. I’m careful not to use the phrase, “sinner saved by grace” because I know it triggers many Christians. The idea is that I was a sinner and God saved me by His grace. The way it is stated however sounds like I’m saying I am still a sinner. That’s where people get upset. They point out that our sinful nature was changed when we were saved and we are former sinners who are now saved by grace.

What does Romans 12:19 mean in the Bible?

Romans 12:19 Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.

The short answer in light of the overall message of forgiveness is that we are not to seek revenge. We are called to forgive our enemies and do good to others, even those that despise us. If vengeance is to be exacted against anyone it is to be left up to God to decide the details. He will deal with those that stand against us. When we truly realize how terrible the consequences of sin can be it should encourage us to pray for mercy upon our detractors.

What's the difference between praying with a rosary and worshipping an idol? Why do some Christians see them as the same?

Catholics use the rosary to keep track of the number of the prayers they pray. The crucifix, the way the beads are grouped and the spaces between the groups determine which prayer to recite. When a prayer is repeated the participant moves from that spot or bead on the rosary to the next until completing the entire cycle.

Idol worship commonly has to do with where prayer and worship is directed. The use of an object such as a statue or other image is usually the focal point. In Christianity we also recognize anything that is given greater importance than God can also be classified as an idol even without directly praying to it, i.e. money, pleasure, possessions, etc.

I haven’t personally known anyone that compared praying the rosary to idol worship. I do see how a person without knowledge of how the beads are used could think people were praying to the rosary as an object. Seeing it used could easily appear to onlookers in that way. This is especially true it the person reciting prayers with a rosary is doing so in front of a statue.

DID JESUS SEE HIMSELF AS A CHRISTIAN?

The term Christian came into being after the death of Jesus. The disciples were first called Christian in Antioch. Acts 11:26 And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.

The word translated “Christian’ actually means follower of Christ. Some believe it was first used in a derogatory way to attempt to ridicule the disciples for imitating Christ. So in answer to your question, for Jesus to see Himself as a Christian would not have been possible since being as much like Him as possible is the goal of Christianity. He was the original model Christianity is built upon.
