BEAUTY DESPITE OBSTACLES

“Praise the Lord from the Earth, you great sea creatures and all ocean depths, lightening and hail, snow and clouds, stormy winds that do his bidding, you mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all cedars, wild animals and all cattle, small creatures and flying birds, kings of the Earth and all nations...” -Psalms 148:7-11

The last couple days we have had a chance to take in the vast beauty that the Lord has created for us. We braved the rain and cold weather in order to embark to find the animals of South Africa. Even though it was cold and the animals were not out in all their glory, we enjoyed the views of the miles and miles of land before us.

In the end, we were able to encounter many of God’s creatures: giraffe, zebra, elephant, buffalo, etc.

Despite the dreary weather we were able to see the wonder of the Lord’s creations great and small.

WE ARE MARCHING IN THE LIGHT OF GOD
SIYAHAMBA KUKHENYENI KWENKHOS

At the Tshaneni Parish we were welcomed by the Imgwayuma congregation. We were introduced to their leaders and students who then performed traditional song and dance. We departed the church for a tour of the Ikwezi palliative care facility where we met several children under their loving care.

The visit moved me in unexpected ways to see the humble servants devoted to providing the best life for these children with such challenging circumstances.

Afterwards, the power went out in the entire village as we began to settle into our accommodations, which lacked hot water and ceilings in the rooms. We again found ourselves faced with discomfort that pushed our typical lives where we typically have more than we need.

The congregation invited us back to the church for more singing and dancing in the dark with just flashlights and candles lighting, but the brightest light shown from their jubilation.

John 1:5: "The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

While we waited for our evening meal, we stepped outside to be greeted by the stars in the sky. This was profound to me as it was a totally new perspective in multiple ways. The stars and constellations were different than what we have on our sky at home. I felt more peace when I was able to find the Southern Cross constellation and it reminded me that God's light shines on us all no matter where we are.

Luke 11:36: "If you are filled with light, with no dark corners, then your whole life will be radiant, as though a floodlight were filling you with light."

As the sun rose, we were greeted by God's beauty in the mountains and fields surrounding us. Our hosts shared a final meal we we prepared to depart. We were given handmade baskets and mats for us to take to our homes. We then provided the host mamas with quilts to add their already abundant warmth and hospitality.
