On this Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost, Pastor Anne Veldhuisen will preach from scripture selections including Exodus 14:19-31, Romans 14:1-12 and Matthew 18:21-35.

Theme of the Scripture:
The forgiveness theme of Matthew’s gospel offers quite a contrast to the triumphalism of deliverance expressed in Exodus. Likewise, the call to acceptance and living only for God expressed in Romans 14 doesn’t have much parallel to Exodus 14; yet the deliverance from slavery is the defining moment of the Hebrew people, Jesus’ people and ancestors of the Christian people. Even when forgiving and accepting, we are reminded that oppression and injustice call for different values and different perspectives.

Prayer:
Spirit of Mercy, we come to your fountain of forgiveness to begin again. You offer a fresh drink, a new life. Though we are often critical of others and of ourselves, help us to accept that we are accepted. Meet us here in ways that we can understand, that we may be filled with the life only you can offer. Amen.

On this Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost, Pastor Anne Veldhuisen will preach from scripture selections including Exodus 12:1-14, Romans 13:8-14 and Matthew 18:15-20.

Theme of the Scripture:
While diverse, these passages interweave a reminder of God’s deliverance and redemption, God’s justice and the urgency of love and the moral life. God’s people are challenged to put on the spirit of light, love, and justice.

Prayer:
God of goodness, when we gather, we are with you. Bind us together in your promise, that our dark nights will soon be over, and the brightness of day will be near. The hour has come. Salvation is here. Let us be your light. Let us be your love. Amen.

On this Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost, Pastor Anne Veldhuisen will preach from scripture selections including Jeremiah 15:15-21, Romans 12:9-21 and Matthew 16:21-28.

Theme of the Scripture:
Woven through these scriptures is the theme of moving through and overcoming trials: As Paul instructs the early church on how to endure suffering – staying humble, caring for others, choosing good over bitterness; as Jesus prepares his friends for his suffering, death, and resurrection, not even deterred by Peter’s fear and discomfort. Within that first theme lies a second theme: not letting ourselves be caught up in bitterness of vengeance but leaving the judgment of foes for God to handle.

Prayer:
Lamb of God, your burden is easy. Good shepherd, your way is righteous. Give us the resolve to follow wherever you lead, knowing the hills and valleys ahead, the place of great suffering and deep hope along the way. May we live our lives worthy of the calling you have given us, in the strong and gentle name of Christ Jesus. Amen.

On this Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost, Pastor Anne Veldhuisen will preach from scripture selections including Isaiah 51:1-6, Romans 12:1-8 and Matthew 16:13-20.

Theme of the Scripture:
It takes a village to build the realm of God. Each person has a role to play. It took Peter and the disciples to proclaim the good news after Jesus’ death. It took people with many and diverse spiritual gifts to fill the church with the talents it needed to thrive. Truly, it takes a village to build the realm of God.

Prayer:
Son of God, Son of Man, you offered your body on the cross. Help us to offer our bodies as a living sacrifice of thanksgiving, that we may be transformed and reformed by your word, in the name of our Sovereign Lord, Christ Jesus. Amen.

Pastor Anne’s message is always strong, meaningful and relates scripture to our lives today.

On this Twelveth Sunday after Pentecost, Pastor Anne Veldhuisen will preach from scripture selections including Isaiah 56:1, 6-8, Romans 11:1-2a, 29-32 and Matthew 15:21-28.

Theme of the Scripture:
What unites us is far greater than what divides us. In Romans, Paul asks rhetorically if God has rejected the Hebrew people by offering salvation to the Gentiles, and answers no. Jesus initially refuses to help a Canaanite woman’s daughter until she presses her case. Then Jesus joyfully heals the daughter, marveling at the mother’s faith. We are all bound together in the unconditional love of God.

Prayer:
Lord of the harvest, we praise you for the bounty that only you can bring. Teach us to trust you with the persistence of the Canaanite woman, who sought healing for her child, and to advocate for the needs of one another. Fill each pantry with sustaining food and fill us with the fruits of the Spirit, that we might serve you until every hunger is met with justice and every outcast is welcomed home, in the name of Jesus of Nazareth. Amen

On this Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost, Pastor Anne Veldhuisen will preach from scripture selections including 1 Kings 19:9-18, Romans 10:5-15 and Matthew 14:22-33.

Theme of the Scripture:
In Matthew 14:22-33, the disciples are overwhelmed with exhaustion after far too many hours battling the storm. They are literally being tormented by the waves. Even though many are seasoned fishermen, they realize their skills will not save them from the life-threatening situation. In the early morning hours, in the deep darkness, with the winds roaring and the waves crashing, Jesus comes straight for them. They mistake him for a spirit of death, but soon experience him as the powerful, rescuing, Son of God.

Prayer:
Prince of peace, you calm the raging seas and speak in silent stillness. Bring us peace that only you can provide and restore the joy of our salvation, that we might find the wisdom to recognize you in unexpected places and the courage to follow, for your name’s sake, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

On this Tenth Sunday after Pentecost, Pastor Anne Veldhuisen will preach from scripture selections including Isaiah 55:1-5, Romans 9:1-5 and Matthew 14:13-21.

Theme of the Scripture:
Doubt, faith, and blessing are interwoven in today’s scripture readings. Paul has no doubt that God has called him to preach to the Gentiles, yet this does not annul the blessings God has bestowed upon Israel. And while Jesus’ disciples want to send the crowds away for food, Jesus knows that they themselves could bless the hungry followers with food if they had sufficient faith. Even in our doubts, blessings are to be had by those who have faith in the One who blesses us.

Prayer:
Divine Ruler, you reign forever. We exalt you above every struggle and distraction. Fill our hearts with your desires and give us the courage to pursue our kingdom on earth as it is in heaven. We look to you, for the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.

On this Ninth Sunday after Pentecost, Elder Barb Springer will preach from scripture selections including Genesis 29:15-28, Romans 8:26-39 and Matthew 13:31-33, 44-52.

Theme of the Scripture:
The mysterious way in which God acts in and through us flows as a theme through each of today’s scripture readings. Paul promises that nothing can separate us from God’s love, but there are certainly plenty of things that separate us from one another and from living fully into God’s promises. Jacob will somehow continue to live his grandfather Abraham’s promise to be the father of great nations. Jesus speaks cryptically and poetically about the kingdom of heaven, leaving us with more questions than answers, but still inspiring us to search for meaning and purpose as followers of God. Accepting the mysteries of God is perhaps as much a part of our faithfulness as is accepting our call to discipleship.

Prayer:
O Lord, your loving-kindness is better than life. There is nothing that can separate us from your enduring love. Move us out, draw us close, and keep us steady, that we might serve you all the days of our lives. All glory, power, dominion, and majesty are yours from eternity to eternity. Amen

Elder Barb Springer’s insights into scripture and how it applies to our reality are always thought provoking and interesting

On this Eighth Sunday after Pentecost, Pastor Anne Veldhuisen will preach from scripture selections including Isaiah 44:6-8, Romans 8:12-25 and Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43

Theme of the Scripture:
The theme of God’s searching love unfolds and deepens with each reading. Paul urges us to give thanks for life in the Spirit by living as children of God, rather than as children of the flesh. Jesus tells his disciples the parable of the wheat and the tares to remind them that though children of darkness surround us, our task is to focus on living as children of light. God’s searching love heals us and the rest of creation, making us children of adoption, children of the Most High. Our proper response to such love is deep gratitude, not hostility to those who have yet to find their way.

Prayer:
Sovereign God, your Spirit is ever present with us. Where can we flee your presence? You are the beginning and the ending, the first and the last, and all that exists in between. When your Spirit seems hidden from us, teach us to recognize your presence and to respond, for your name’s sake. Amen.

On this Seventh Sunday after Pentecost, Pastor Anne Veldhuisen will preach from scripture selections including Isaiah 55:10-13, Romans 8:1-11 and Matthew 13:1-9. 18-23.

Theme of the Scripture:
The Parable of the Sower in Matthew teaches us to nurture the soil of our lives, as we listen to the word of God for understanding and action. As seeds are scattered near the path, we can count on the word of God as a lamp to our feet, lighting the path for even greater understanding. Taking those ideas into the world, we can learn to nurture ourselves as well as others.

Prayer:
Almighty God, in you there are no shortages and nothing lacking. We thank you for giving us nourishment from the flourishing fields of creation. Form and reform us by your word, that we may rejoice in your bounty and share your inheritance of abundance, all the days of our lives. Amen
