On this Second Sunday after Pentecost, Pastor Anne Veldhuisen will preach from scripture selections including Psalm 33:1-12 Romans 4:13-25 and Matthew 9:9-13,18-26

Theme of the Scripture:
The blessings God gives are blessings to be shared with others. Jesus comes not to bless through righteousness, but rather through grace and faith. Blessed by God, Jesus is proclaimed God’s beloved child—not through any righteousness of his own, but simply through grace and faith. Blessed by God, Jesus welcomes a tax collector to become a disciple who will share his blessings with others. Blessed by God, Jesus heals an outcast woman and a ruler’s child who has a sickness unto death. The blessings are not divvied up according to righteousness, status, or identity, but rather given freely and fully as gifts of grace.

Prayer:
God of all, thank you for your many blessings. Your mercies are new every morning, your grace is sufficient, and you remain present in times of trouble. Your words alone can heal us, your love saves, and your name makes us whole. Revive our faith, resurrect our hope, and renew our commitment to love one another, that we may offer you gratitude. Amen.

On this Trinity Sunday, Pastor Anne Veldhuisen will preach from scripture selections including Psalm 8, 2 Corinthians 13:11-13 and Matthew 28:16-20.

Theme of the Scripture:
The Divine is present humanity and all of creation in infinite ways - from the first breath of God at the first spark of creation, through the life, ministry, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus, and in the continuing aspirations of the Holy Spirit. On Trinity Sunday, we reflect on the many ways the Divine is with us and how we are called and led and nurtured to care for humanity and all of creation to the end of the age.

Prayer:
Creator God, you called the universe into existence. Like a mother, you shaped us from the clay of the earth, and your breath gave us life. We praise you for your sustaining love and grace. Fix our thoughts and focus our hearts on you, that we might honor you by caring for all of creation. Amen.

On this Pentecost Sunday, Pastor Anne Veldhuisen will preach from scripture selections including Acts 2:1-21 and John 7:37-39.

Theme of the Scripture:
The Spirit came at Pentecost, transforming the faithful into powerful witnesses to Jesus. The message came in a variety of languages to a variety of people. We are reminded that the gifts of the spirit are varied and each is needed for the common good. Pentecost encourages us to open our hearts to recognize God’s work in a variety of people and in many circumstances. All are welcome in God’s love.

Prayer:
God of all creation, we come at last to be united in the Spirit, your gleaming fire among us, setting our hearts ablaze. We praise you with our whole being. Live in us that we may love with your love, speak with your truth and serve with your mercy. Keep us faithful until the very end, though Jesus the Christ. Amen.

On this Ascension Sunday, Pastor Anne Veldhuisen will preach from scripture selections including Acts 1:6-14, 1 Peter 4:12-14, 5:6-11 and John 17:1-11.

Theme of the Scripture:
Ascension Sunday reveals a power that lies within and yet beyond ordinary experience. The same power that raised Jesus from the dead and heals our bodies and our souls when we feel broken beyond repair brings gifts of the Holy Spirit that are as powerful and often fleeting as waking dreams. As Jesus is lifted up to the heavens, we are reminded to look beyond earthly power to the power of the Most High God. The immediacy of such power is as palpable as the inability to articulate the reality of its meaning for our lives. Yet real it is.

Prayer:
God of seekers and dreamers, speak to us now as we wait for your promised word. Protect your people, we pray. The road ahead may be long, but fill us with determination and courage. Teach us to be your body with faith and love, that we might serve one another as companions on the way, through Jesus the Christ. Amen.

On this 6th Sunday of Easter, Pastor Anne Veldhuisen will preach from scripture selections including Acts 17:22-31, 1 Peter 3:13-22 and John 14:15-21.

Theme of the Scripture:
Love and suffering seem to be the two great paths to God. Suffering gets our attention and is a great vehicle of transformation, while love shows us the nature of God. God put other nations over Israel to lead the Israelites through fire and water into a spacious place of blessing. 1 Peter speaks of the suffering that will come from following Christ, and then urges the people to do good works anyway. For it is better suffer for doing good than for doing evil. In the Gospel reading, Jesus promises the disciples that he will not leave them comfortless, but will send them the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, to teach them the truth about God and holy love. The reading from Acts does not fit this theme, but recounts the story of Paul in Areopagus, proclaiming the God of Jesus Christ as the one the Athenians worshiped as an unknown god.

Prayer:
Faithful God, through all the ages, you have kept your promises. You have freed us from the powers of scarcity and death for abundant new life. Stay with us as we wait and watch for your Spirit with excitement and hope, that we may experience your love and share it with our lives, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen

On this 5th Sunday of Easter, Elder Barb Springer will preach from scripture selections including Acts 7:55-60, Psalm 31:1-5, 15-16 and John 14:1-14.

Theme of the Scripture:
God’s steadfast faithfulness makes our faithfulness possible. We need not be the strong ones, for God’s strength is enough: to give Stephen courage to face martyrdom and to give the psalmist faith to proclaim God’s refuge, even when surrounded by enemies. Jesus knows that the troubles of this world are real; yet he promises that we can trust God to lead us on the way both in this earthly life and in the life to come. God’s steadfast faithfulness will get us through, even when our faith waivers.

Prayer:
God of all journeys, the road we travel is stony, and often we struggle to hold fast to hope. But in you, we find new courage, new purpose, and new life. By your grace, teach us to live as your Easter people, with mercy, compassion, and justice. Guide us with your light, that in your all-sufficient presence, we might raise our voices in endless praise. Amen.

Elder Barb Springer’s insights into scripture and how it applies to our reality are always thought provoking and interesting

On this 4th Sunday of Easter, Pastor Anne Veldhuisen will preach from scripture selections including Acts 2:42-47, Psalm 23 and John 10:1-10.

Theme of the Scripture:
The shepherd that is revered by the psalmist is celebrated by John as both shepherd and gate for the sheep. We rejoice that Jesus, our shepherd, calls us each by name and is the one who came that we may have abundant life. Acts describes abundant life as gifts of Christian fellowship, breaking bread together, prayer, attention to the apostle’s teachings, and sharing all things in common. But when we return to our shepherd and guardian after going astray, we are healed and welcomed home.

Prayer:
God our Shepherd, you are our safe place, our shelter, our ground, our breath. We turn to you in hope and trust, knowing we have come this far by faith, and you will guide us all the way. Mold our daily patterns for your purposes so that we may live as one heart and mind with you and our neighbors, rejoicing together and praising your holy name, through Jesus the Christ. Amen.

On this 3rd Sunday of Easter, Elder Barb Springer will preach from scripture selections including Psalm 116:1-4,012-19 and Luke 24:13-35

Theme of the Scripture:
Luke’s story of the walk to Emmaus carries so many beautiful themes: Christ walks with us, even when we are unaware of his presence; Christ stays with us when we offer hospitality to strangers; Christ opens our eyes to the presence of the divine when we break bread together. The psalmist praises God for rescue, promising faithful service in return. Christ meets us, even when we don’t recognize him; then Christ opens our eyes and offers us a glorious future. This is good news indeed.

Prayer:
Risen and Living God, in your endless love and grace, you have given us all we need. Open our weary eyes to moments when need meets resource and longing is satisfied in giving. Send us where you need us and fill us with your purpose, so that all people may know the wonder and joy of your redeeming presence, through Jesus the Christ. Amen.

On this 2nd Sunday of Easter, Pastor Anne Veldhuisen will preach from scripture selections including Acts 2:14a, 22-32, 1 Peter 1:3-9 and John 20:19-31

Theme of the Scripture:
Why does Thomas want to touch Jesus’ wounds? Yes, he wants proof that this living person before him is the Jesus who died. But what if there is something more? To see and touch Jesus’ wounded body is for Thomas to experience an embodied knowing of Jesus’ suffering—his torn and bruised flesh. The disciples do not know firsthand Jesus’ last hours (except for John and the three Marys who stood at the foot of the cross.) You could say that Jesus shows them the suffering of our world in his own body. And when he invites Thomas to touch his wounds, he invites him to touch this suffering and then to recognize and claim the incredible power of God in Jesus. From this power, disciples like Thomas turn around and, as Jesus did, touch the wounds of the world through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Prayer:
Holy God, we sing your praises. You have brought us new life and freed us for love. Shake us free of anything that inhibits us from living fully as your new creation. Help us to live into your resurrection in relationships mended, wounds healed, communities restored, and wrongs made right, that we might reach for your hand and to witness together, “My Lord and my God!” Amen.
