and as messengers of your good news. Help us to offer your

among us will be filled with laughter. Let your glory shine in this

They said to him, “Where is your wife Sarah?” And he said, “there,
in the tent.” Then one said, “I will surely return to you in due season,
and your wife Sarah shall have a son.” And Sarah was listening at
the tent entrance behind him. Now Abraham and Sarah were old,
advanced in age; it had ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of
women. So Sarah laughed to herself, saying, “After I have grown old,
and my husband is old, shall I have pleasure?” The LORD said to
Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh, and say, ‘Shall I indeed bear a child,
now that I am old?’ Is anything too wonderful for the LORD? At the
set time I will return to you, in due season, and Sarah shall have a son.”
But Sarah denied, saying, “I did not laugh”; for she was afraid. He
said, “Oh yes, you did laugh.”
The LORD dealt with Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did for
Sarah as he had promised. Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a
son in his old age, at the time of which God had spoken to him.
Abraham gave the name Isaac to his son whom Sarah bore him.
And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days
old, as God had commanded him. Abraham was a hundred years
old when his son Isaac was born to him. Now Sarah said, “God
has brought laughter for me; everyone who hears will laugh with me.”
And she said, “Who would ever have said to Abraham that Sarah
would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.”

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

*OPENING SENTENCES
One: God calls us out of places known and secure. The Lord invites
us into a living, trusting relationship. The Spirit is constantly
offering new opportunities to us.
Many: We are called away from empty pursuits. God wants to
employ our talents for the common good. Let us worship
the Living Lord with our whole being.

*HYMN “Lead Me, Lord” # 593

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION:
Righteous God, we come to you as tax collectors and sinners
flocked to Jesus long ago. We have wavered in distrust of
your promises, yet cling to their truth. We believe that your
ways are far more fulfilling than any we can devise, yet we
shrink from following where Christ leads. Forgive our pursuit
of lesser gods we create, and draw us closer to you. We pray
in Jesus’ name. Amen.

not ours. Let these gifts summon others to follow in the path
of Jesus. This we ask through Christ our Lord. Amen.

SCRIPTURE READING: Genesis 12:1-9
(Chisolm/Runyan)
Now the LORD said to Abram, “Go from your country and your
kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you.
I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make
your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those
who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse; and in
you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
So Abram went, as the LORD had told him; and Lot went with him.
Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.
Abram took his wife Sarai and his brother’s son Lot, and all the
possessions that they had gathered, and the persons whom they
had acquired in Haran; and they set forth to go to the land of
Canaan. When they had come to the land of Canaan, Abram
passed through the land to the place at Shechem, to the oak of
Moreh. At that time the Canaanites were in the land. Then the
LORD appeared to Abram, and said, “To your offspring I will give
this land.” So he built there an altar to the LORD, who had
appeared to him. From there he moved on to the hill country on
the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west
and Ai on the east; and there he built an altar to the LORD and
invoked the name of the LORD. And Abram journeyed on by
stages toward the Negeb.

Throughout the month of May members of St. John brought in items for the Blessing Box at Shannondale. This morning the items were bagged and loaded in the back of my van for a "road trip" tomorrow to deliver all the items. In addition to all these items a sizable order has been placed for delivery directly to Shannondale. Items consisted of paper towels, toilet tissue, laundry detergent, and non-perishable food, thanks to the monetary donations also made. St. John, Manchester, you are the BEST! Thanks for such an outstanding response to our plea!

We give our money, O God. Some of it, anyway − a
little, relatively speaking. What if, instead, we were to
give ourselves completely with utter abandon to your
good news − to your way of being? What if we just
said, “Oh, to heaven with it!” and went for it? All or
nothing. We’re going to wager ourselves on you, God.
What if we were to do that? We give our money − some
of it − a little, relatively speaking. It’s a start. We pray
for the possibility of more in the name of the one who
gave himself completely. Amen.

PULPIT HYMN
“For the Beauty of the Earth”
SCRIPTURE: Genesis 1:1-2:4a
# 56
In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth
was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a
wind from God swept over the face of the waters. Then God said, “Let
there be light”; and there was light. And God saw that the light was good;
and God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day,
and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was
morning, the first day.
And God said, “Let there be a dome in the midst of the waters; and let it
separate the waters from the waters.” So God made the dome and
separated the waters that were under the dome from the waters that were
above the dome. And it was so. God called the dome Sky. And there was
evening and there was morning, the second day.
And God said, “Let the waters under the sky be gathered together into one
place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so. God called the dry land
Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And
God saw that it was good. Then God said, “Let the earth put forth vegetation:
plants yielding seed, and fruit trees of every kind on earth that bear fruit
with the seed in it.” And it was so. The earth brough forth vegetation:
plants yielding seed of every kind, and trees of every kind bearing fruit with
the seed in it. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening, and
there was morning, the third day.
And God said, “Let there be lights in the dome of the sky to separate the
day from the night; and let them be for signs and for seasons and for
days and years, and let them be lights in the dome of the sky to give light
upon the earth.” And it was so. God made the two great lights — the
greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night — and
the stars. God set them in the dome of the sky to give light upon the
earth, to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light
from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. And there was
evening and there was morning, the fourth day.
And God said, “Let the waters bring forth swarms of living creatures, and
let birds fly above the earth across the dome of the sky.” So God created
the great sea monsters and every living creature that moves, of every
kind, with which the waters warm, and every winged bird of every kind.
And God saw that it was good. God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful
and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the
earth.” And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day.
And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures of every kind;
cattle and creeping things and wild animals of the earth of every kind.”
And it was so. God made the wild animals of the earth of every kind, and
the cattle of every kind, and everything that creeps upon the ground of
every kind. And God saw that it was good.
Then God said, “Let us make humankind in our image, according to our
likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over
the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the wild animals of
the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.”
So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God
he created them, male and female he created them.
God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill
the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and
over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the
earth.” God said, “See, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is
upon the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit; you
shall have them for food. And to every beast of the earth, and to every
bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that
has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was
so. God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good.
And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.
Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all their multitude. And
on the seventh day God finished the work that he had done, and he rested
on the seventh day from all the work that he had done. So God blessed
the seventh day and hallowed it, because on it God rested from all the work
that he had done in creation.
These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were
created.

SCRIPTURE: John 20:19-23
When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the
doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear
of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be
with you.” After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side.
Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to
them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I
send you.” When he had said this, he breathed on them and said
to them, Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they
are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”
