Bob’s Story: Purpose through Service

As Bob reflects over the past ten years he says, “It’s incredible what I see on the faces of those who serve. What I always hear them say is, ‘I get more out of this than I give.’ It is so much work, though. People say, ‘you put in so much work that can’t be true.’ But it is.”

Bob has spent the past decade leading the annual Feed My Starving Children mobile pack, but the road to discovering this purpose wasn’t always easy. He had a very successful career at the same Fortune 50 company for decades, until he didn’t. The company was sold, and suddenly he found himself in early retirement. In that same year, Bob’s father died. His wife Brenda’s mother died. Their sons finished college and moved away, and Bob received a concerning health diagnosis. Sometimes change comes slowly; sometimes it comes in crashing waves. With all these circumstances hitting at once, Bob found himself not only dealing with grief, but also struggling with his sense of identity and purpose.

Bob and Brenda were in a small group with others from Good Shepherd, where they had formed deep, lasting friendships. One of those friends was David Franz. David walked with Bob and listened to his story. Bob had learned so much in his decades of leadership in the business world, but now is focus was on how to give back. He wanted to find a place he could give his time, energy, and expertise to make an impact. That’s when David made a connection that would change Bob’s life.

Feed My Starving Children had been growing at Good Shepherd, but something was missing. There was a strong team, there was deep passion, but the project needed the leadership skillset to take it to the next level. David introduced Bob to Sean Guerkink and Steve Spoerle who had been heading up the project. “I had been searching for a non-profit to work with where I could give back,” Bob said, “but I thought ‘it couldn’t be this thing that’s right in front of me, could it?’” But as he learned more about the mission of Feed My Starving Children, he knew this was where he was meant to be.

Bob knew he could take the leadership skills he had learned in the for-profit world to support a non-profit organization. He quickly sought to implement focused agendas with action items, develop strategies and increase efficiency. But as he began, he discovered he had some learning to do! “I was shocked at the first meeting,” Bob remembers. “It was three hours! The first hour was just people sharing about family members who were sick or struggles in their lives.” Bob knew he had to adapt his leadership style. He learned that there is a big difference between leading employees who have to be there, verses volunteers that want to be there. Not only did Bob find deep purpose in the mission of feeding starving children, but he discovered opportunities to continue growing as a leader.

After 10 years of leading the Feed My Starving Children mobile pack (now Feed the Need, STL), Bob’s impact on this mission is significant. “Today our meetings are much shorter,” Bob says with a smile. “We have tight agendas and we’re much more efficient, but we take time to care for one another.” The relationships Bob has formed with others on the team are profound. “Over these last 10 years, this is the most important and impactful work I’ve ever done.”

Every year, Good Shepherd’s largest financial support for service ministry is to Feed the Need, STL. Thanks to your generosity, both financial and participatory, lives are being changed around the world. Not only the kids whose lives are saved, but the people right here, discovering their purpose in being a part of something bigger. “I always say this is like Christmas for us. There is a child you’ll never see, never meet, and never know their name. You give them the gift of life.”

Today’s Challenge - June 4th - SUMMER OF PURPOSE

Read Jeremiah 1:5 and 1 Peter 2:9.

As you read, keep an eye out for these three truths:

God saw you before anyone else even knew you existed.

God calls each person for His own purposes.

God invites His people to live set apart from the world.

Take a little time to write down what these verses reveal about how God sees you and the way He’s calling you to live.

Reflection Questions

Jeremiah was called by God before he ever understood what the future would bring. How do you react when God asks you to trust Him without all the answers laid out?

What gifts, experiences, or lessons from your life is God using to get you ready for something bigger than yourself?

1 Peter 2:9 says believers are called “out of darkness into His marvelous light.” What habits, attitudes, or fears is God inviting you to leave behind?

If someone watched how you lived this week, what clues would show that you belong to God and are following His light?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for seeing potential in me even before I could. Help me trust Your call, especially when I can’t see the whole path. Guide me out of anything holding me back from fully living in Your light, and give me courage to live as someone set apart for You.

Amen.

Today’s June 3rd Challenge - 8 week growth:

Read Genesis 1 and 2 and Ephesians 2:10.

As you read, pay attention to three things:

1. God created you on purpose, not by accident.
2. You were made in God’s image, which means you have real value.
3. God gave you a purpose, along with good works for you to do.

Take a few minutes to jot down what these passages reveal about who you are.

Reflection Questions

1. If you believed you were made by God, with a purpose and priceless worth, with the understanding that you were created to make an incredible and changeable impact in the world, how would your life look different?
2. Which part of these verses stands out the most to you today? Why?
3. Genesis 1–2 says God called everything He made good. Knowing you’re part of God’s creation, how does that shape the way you see yourself?
4. Ephesians 2:10 says you were made in Christ Jesus for good works. What’s right in front of you, what gifts, talents, or abilities has God given you to serve others right now?

Prayer

Lord, thank you for making me in Your image and giving my life meaning. Help me see myself as You see me, trust You as You shape me, and step forward with confidence in the calling You’ve given me. Amen.

Here is our first day challenge for our 8 week growth:

Read Psalm 139 slowly and thoughtfully.

As you read, look for three things:
A verse that reminds you that God knows you.
A verse that reminds you that God values you.
A verse that reminds you that God has a purpose for your life.

Write those verses down and spend a few moments reflecting on them.

Today's Reflection Question:
Which verse from Psalm 139 speaks most clearly to where you are in life right now, and why?

Prayer
Lord, help me see myself through Your eyes. Remind me that my worth is not found in what I do, what I have, or what others think of me. Help me remember that I am known, loved, and created with purpose. Amen.

TAKING CARE OF WHAT GOD ENTRUSTED TO YOU

Romans 12:2 • Proverbs 4:23

Most of us know how to put others first, but when it comes to caring for ourselves, we often fall short. We push past exhaustion, brush aside stress, ignore the pain sitting quietly in our hearts. “I’ll rest later,” we promise, as if later ever really comes. But God doesn’t overlook these parts of us, He calls our attention to them. Our minds, our hearts, our bodies, our souls, they all matter to Him.

Romans 12:2 urges us to let our minds be renewed, because what we dwell on shapes everything: our outlook, our actions, even our sense of who we really are. Proverbs 4:23 says, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” The health of our inner life spills into everything we touch.

Self-care, from a biblical perspective, isn’t selfish, it’s stewardship. God entrusted your life to you, not to be used up and cast aside, but cared for. Sometimes faith is quiet prayer. Sometimes it’s shutting the laptop and going to bed. Sometimes it means having the hard conversation, seeking healing, taking a walk, calling a friend, or even tougher, letting yourself breathe.

Rest when you’re tired.
Let yourself heal when you’ve been hurt.
Pay attention to your heart.
Feed your mind good things.
Look after your body.
You’re called to love people well, but remember, you’re one of God’s beloved too, and you’re worth the care.

Reflection: Where do you need your own attention today, mind, body, heart, or soul?
