🗓Sept. 16—Oct. 21
⌚6 pm in Room D-113

Church buildings are more than backdrops for worship — they shape how we experience God, connect with one another, and grow in faith. Drawing on research from Barna and the Aspen Group, this six-session study explores how sacred space can foster Inspiration, Community, and Formation in the life of a congregation. We'll wrestle with big questions — What does it mean for a space to feel transcendent? Can a building help or hinder genuine community? How does our physical environment shape our spiritual habits? — before turning our attention to our own facilities at FBC Lumberton and discerning what changes might better serve our life together. Join us this fall as we discover what our spaces are already saying — and what we might want them to say instead.

Good morning and welcome to worship. Whenever and wherever you are joining us from, we are glad you are here today. Dr. Joshua Owens has prepared a sermon titled "Which Side of the Water?" based on Exodus 14:15-31. We will present Bibles to 1st and 2nd Graders during Worship today.

Twenty-five years ago this evening, our congregation gathered to pray, reflect, sing, and seek the comfort of God's presence together. We mourned as a community the senseless loss of life, the fear wrought in our country, and sought to unify around shared human experience. Today we remember the lives lost on that fateful day, and the many ways our lives and world have changed since.

In that service, we read passages from Romans 8:31-39 and Psalm 46: “God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble” (v. 1). We shared prayers for our nation, its leaders, those in the military, those who had lost loved ones, and sought God’s loving compassion in a time of great tragedy. We also prayed for the world and all of its peoples. So as our nation commerates the 25th anniversary of 9/11, I leave you with the closing portions of the prayer our faith community prayed then, hoping that it can continue to be the prayer of all of God’s people 25 years later and for all the days ahead:

“O God, you are the hope of all the ends of the earth, the God of the spirits of all flesh. Hear our humble intercession for all races and families on earth, that you will turn all hearts to yourself. Remove from our minds hatred, prejudice, and contempt for those who are not of our own race or color, class or creed, that, departing from everything that estranges and divides, we may by you be brought into unity of spirit, in the bond of peace, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.”
