Following reports that a Christian woman in West Bengal was beaten, stripped, and subjected to a forced Hindu “purification” ritual, the Vulnerable People Project (VPP) today announced its Save India’s Christians campaign and introduced SaveIndiasChristians.com.
In VPP News’ October 27 report, Lakshmi Mondal described an attack intended to force her family and two other Christian families to abandon their faith. She said her family was threatened with being burned alive. Police registered a case against 13 people and deployed protection around the families’ homes.
VPP’s new campaign seeks to mobilize Christians and other people of conscience against anti-Christian mob violence and the use of laws and government restrictions to punish peaceful religious activity throughout India. SaveIndiasChristians.com brings together reporting, advocacy, and a petition urging elected officials in the United States to use diplomatic, legislative, and economic measures to defend India’s Christians and other persecuted minorities.
The petition calls for protection of churches, schools, hospitals, homes, and burial grounds; investigations and accountability for attacks; freedom for those imprisoned for peaceful religious activity; and an end to the punitive use of “anti-conversion” laws and foreign-funding restrictions.
VPP is inviting churches, pastors, journalists, and concerned citizens to sign the petition, share the campaign, and bring the experiences of India’s Christians to their elected representatives.
