CELEBRATING A LEGACY OF FAITH, LEADERSHIP, AND SERVICE!
What an extraordinary afternoon of celebration, inspiration, and recognition at Philander Smith University’s Clergy Empowerment Luncheon, held Tuesday, October 27, 2026, in celebration of Clergy Appreciation Month!
Under the theme “Hands on the Plow, Eyes on the Prize,” three distinguished Philander Smith alumni were honored with Lifetime Achievement Awards in recognition of their faithful service, spiritual leadership, and lasting contributions to the Church and community.
Rev. Dr. Maurice Watson, ’84 – Senior Pastor, Second Baptist Church
Rev. Maxine Allen – Retired Elder, Arkansas Conference UMC
Bishop Steven Arnold – Pastor, Grace United Church
The afternoon was beautifully enriched by the melodious voice of Ms. Crisshaundra Pullom, ’13, whose musical selection blessed those in attendance.
A particularly meaningful moment came through the powerful message delivered by Rev. Dr. Janiece Williams, entitled “When It Hurts to Help,” rooted in Ephesians Chapter 3.
What a timely and thought-provoking message for pastors and ministry leaders who faithfully pour into others, often while navigating their own challenges. Her sermon title speaks to a reality of servant leadership: ministry requires sacrifice, compassion, perseverance, and a willingness to continue serving even when the assignment becomes difficult.
Yet, we are reminded in Ephesians 3:20 that God is able to do “exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us.”
A special congratulations to our very own Senior Pastor, Rev. Dr. Maurice Watson! Your lifetime of prophetic preaching, visionary leadership, and unwavering commitment to God’s people continues to leave an indelible mark on the Church and the communities you serve.
We celebrate you, along with Rev. Maxine Allen and Bishop Steven Arnold, for your extraordinary contributions to ministry and the enduring legacies you continue to build.
The work is not always easy. The calling is not without sacrifice. But the impact of faithful service reaches far beyond what our eyes can see.
