The Puritans in Massachusetts viewed the Quakers as so powerful a threat to the stability of their colony that they had passed legislation forbidding Friends within their borders upon pain of death. Mary Dyer kept coming back, "willing to suffer, as her Brethren did," and was publicly executed in 1660.

In this week's Look to the Light message, we remember Mary and other Friends who have come into conflict with the state because they followed God's leading.

We're excited to announce the most recent Pendle Hill Pamphlet #498 on "Letting Go: Steps in the Spiritual Life" by Jennifer Kavanagh. This pamphlet explores what might get in the way of being open to the Spirit, and the joy and freedom of letting it go. The clutter that separates us from God, our essential selves, or our life’s purpose is different for everyone, and different at each stage of life. It can be material, busyness, or “inner clutter” – ways in which the ego gets in the way. Letting go is an ongoing journey and might be considered as the keystone of the spiritual life. You can purchase yours in the bookstore at https://pendlehill.org/product/letting-go-steps-in-the-spiritual-life/, or subscribe to the pamphlet series https://pendlehill.org/product-category/subscriptions/

“Peace be with you.” These were the first words the risen Christ spoke to his disciples - words which feel particularly important as conflict continues around the globe.

The theme for World Quaker Day on 4 October 2026 is Let Peace Be Among Us, with the supporting Bible passage, Hebrews 12:14, “Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy.”

FWCC is planning a massive open online Meeting for Worship on the day (4 October), bringing together Friends across borders, time zones, and Quaker traditions with a shared focus on peace.

Please save the date and start talking with your local meeting or Friends Church about joining together as a group. You may also wish to display this poster (pictured), which you can download in high resolution from our website here: www.worldquakerday.org

From the earliest days, Quakers were known for speaking truth as they experienced it inwardly in their meetings for worship. They didn't make a distinction between belief and action. Truth was almost more of a verb than a noun; it was something which you 'did' as you experienced it.

In the United States, the current ruling regime makes no secret of its contempt for the poor, for immigrants, for people of color, for q***r people in general and transgender people in particular.

Every person rejected by the elites, though, has that of God in them. Every outcast has a home in the blessed community. And when they come together in love and solidarity, it can be, as George Fox urged us to be, "a terror to all the adversaries of God."
