Unitarian Universalist Principles

We the member congregations of the Unitarian Universalist Association, covenant to affirm and promote:

The inherent worth and dignity of every person

Justice, equity, and compassion in human relations

Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations

A free and responsible search for truth and meaning

The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large

The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all

Respect for the interdependent web of all existence, of which we are a part

The living tradition which we share draws from many sources:

Direct experience of that transcending mystery and wonder, affirmed in all cultures, which moves us to a renewal of the spirit and an openness to the forces which create and uphold life;

Words and deeds of prophetic women and men which challenge us to confront powers and structures of evil with justice, compassion, and the transforming power of love;

Wisdom from the world’s religions which inspire us in our ethical and spiritual life;

Those Jewish and Christian teachings that call us to respond to God’s love by loving our neighbors as ourselves;

Those humanist teachings that counsel us to heed the guidance of reason and the results of science, and warn us against idolatries of the mind and spirit;

Those spiritual teachings of earth-centered traditions that celebrate the sacred circle of life and instruct us to live in harmony with the rhythms of nature.

Today, UUA President Rev. Sofía Betancourt, PhD was arrested in Washington, D.C., alongside other people of faith while protesting the Department of Homeland Security budget.

Rev. Betancourt joined religious leaders at the U.S. Capitol Complex to oppose a budget that continues to fund ICE and Customs and Border Protection—agencies responsible for ongoing harm and violence in our communities. As she said earlier today, there is no moral justification for a budget that deepens this damage.

This is a developing story. Read more about today’s action and Rev. Betancourt’s remarks—link to the article in the comments.

“As Unitarian Universalists, fighting for justice and liberation for all people is at the heart of our faith tradition, which recognizes the spark of the divine inherent in every person,” said UUA Executive Vice President Carey McDonald. “Our sacred spaces must continue to offer sanctuary to those who face oppression, violence, or alienation, including immigrant communities.”

The Trump policy allowing raids in houses of worship violates the First Amendment and the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA), the lawsuit argues.

Your donation allows the UUA to respond flexibly to current disaster needs as well as to new emergency situations as they arise.

The Disaster Relief Fund disburses grants to UU congregations and recognized UU non-profit entities.

Our Disaster Relief Fund is part of a covenant between the UUA and congregations, between congregations who give generously and those in need, and with our community partners. Through this work, we are able to embody our faith and values.

WASHINGTON (RNS) — 'This is religious favoritism, and it is not only dangerous, but runs counter to my religion and faith,' said the Rev. Jeff Sims, a Presbyterian Church (USA) minister and a plaintiff in the case.
