Community is ancient wisdom.
Long before any of us had the words for mutual aid, care, or solidarity, human beings survived because someone shared what they had. Food. Fire. Shelter. Presence.
Ethical Humanism reminds us that we belong to one another — not as a burden, but as a promise. We are here because someone stayed. And now it is our turn to show up for each other. - Ethical Society of St. Louis

Welcome to Humanists Living Life Ethically
Humanists Living Life Ethically is a welcoming group within the Susquehanna Valley Ethical Society (SVES), created for people who want to explore what it means to live with intention and integrity. Together, we reflect on humanist values and ethical living in a supportive community where everyone can learn, share, and grow.

Susquehanna Valley Ethical Society is a congregational humanist organization. We are guided by the best human thinking in the areas of ethics, science, and well-being. Individuals of all beliefs or non-beliefs, are provided a warm and welcoming environment for belonging, for learning, and for practicing humanist-living, seeking ways for being together to make humanist-life possible and enjoyable. We support and respect personal autonomy and diverse perspectives.

Yes, Ethical Culture is recognized as a religion - it is established that nontheistic institutions that function in a way similar to churches should be treated in a similar way.
******
Washington Ethical Society v. District of Columbia
October 1, 1957
This court case, along with Fellowship of Humanity v. County of Alameda, helped establish that nontheistic institutions that function in a way similar to churches should be treated in a similar way, i.e. qualifying for tax exemptions. The AEU organized fundraising for the case and wrote a brief. See the 1957 Decision herehttps://aeu.org/wp-content/uploads/WES-tax-case-1957.pdf

******
Torcaso v. Watkins
June 19, 1961
Supreme Court ruled that requirement of a belief in God as a test for office violated the 1st and 14th amendments. Footnote in opinion referred to Ethical Culture, as well as Buddhism, Taoism, and Secular Humanism as being examples of religions which do not teach a belief in God. Roy Torcaso, a member of the Washington Society, was rejected by Maryland when he applied to be a notary public. The AEU organized fundraising and submitted an amicus curiae (friend of the court) brief. The 1957 tax case was referenced in the Supreme Court’s decision.

Ed Ericson Testifies for Conscientious Objectors
1967
Ed Ericson testified, on behalf of the AEU, before House and Senate Committees, arguing in favor of eligibility for conscientious objector status of people who do not profess a belief in a supreme being. Testimony helped in getting eligibility of non-theistic conscientious objector applicants approved.

******
Lemon v. Kurtzman
June 28, 1971
Supreme Court ruled unanimously that Pennsylvania and Rhode Island statutes providing state aid to religious schools were unconstitutional, involving excessive entanglement of the state with the church. Al Lemon was a member and later President of the Philadelphia Society. The “Lemon Test” (to avoid conflict with religious clauses of first amendment, statute must have a secular purpose, its primary effect must be that it neither advances nor inhibits religion, and it must not foster excessive government entanglement with religion) is still quoted.

******
Strayhorn v. Ethical Society of Austin
2003
Texas Appeals Court ruled that a belief system not premised on a belief in God was nevertheless qualified as a religion for tax exemption purposes. Jone Johnson Lewis, an Ethical Culture Leader, testified in the lower court hearing on behalf of the AEU. https://aeu.org/who-we-are/history/

Felix Adler founded the Ethical Culture Movement with the vision to unite humanity over ethical values and moral action. Listen to four of Felix Adler’s 1904 “The Essentials of Spirituality” addresses on LibriVox (credit: Lee Smalley).

Zero HIV Stigma Day is observed each year on July 21 to raise awareness about HIV stigma.
Every person deserves dignity, respect, and compassion—no exceptions. Zero HIV Stigma Day is a global call to end the shame, fear, and discrimination that still surround HIV.
Stigma hurts. It keeps people from getting tested, seeking care, and living openly. Together, communities can change that story. https://tockify.com/susquehanna.valley.ethical.society/detail/344/1784757600000

"I would never shame a meat-eater — humanist or not. But for anyone who has trouble reconciling their values and their diet, I encourage you to seek out inspiration. A catalyst to make a change. Empathy and morality are second nature to us as humanists. It’s a short journey from supporting human flourishing to protecting the dear animals with whom we share our planet." - Ellie Haylund is president of HumanistsMN.
