Today (Saturday), Pope Leo XIV will lead a worldwide Rosary for peace and for those afflicted by war and violence. He will lead the prayer at the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes in the Vatican Gardens at 7pm local time (which is 1pm Eastern). We currently don't have any details if the Vatican plans to stream the prayer service...but you can join in this worldwide prayer locally. St James will be hosting the Rosary at 1pm for our Lakewood community.

On November 21, 1964, at the conclusion of the third session of the Second Vatican Council, Pope Paul VI officially proclaimed Mary as “Mother of the Church”, emphasizing her spiritual motherhood over all Christians and the Church itself.

Mary’s title as Mother of the Church has both biblical and theological roots. At the crucifixion, Jesus entrusted Mary to the Apostle John, saying, “Woman, behold your son,” and to John, “Behold your mother” (John 19:26-27), symbolically giving her to all believers as a spiritual mother. Early Church Fathers, including Saint Augustine and Saint Leo the Great, also recognized Mary as the New Eve and mother of those living in Christ, linking her maternal role to the Church.

In 2018, Pope Francis designated the Monday after Pentecost—the day following the Church’s birthday—as the annual Memorial of Mary, Mother of the Church.

Heavenly Father,

On this Memorial Day, we pause to remember and honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our nation. We thank You for their courage, sacrifice, and dedication to the cause of freedom, and we entrust their souls to Your eternal care. Grant them rest in Your presence.

Comfort the families and loved ones who mourn their loss. Surround them with Your peace and strength, and remind them that their sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Through Christ our Lord,
Amen
