Is this good news for the poor? That baseline question is a pretty good yardstick for measuring our decisions and actions according to Gospel standards. It's the exact yardstick that Jesus presents as he lays out his mission for the hometown crowd and again when he confronts a rich young man. Discipleship is not about checking boxes. It's about giving our whole selves to mission of justice, liberation and healing.

Rampant economic grift, corruption in the judiciary, lying leaders. Sounds familiar! Micah excoriates his community as they've forgotten how to live with trust and mutuality and he invites God's salvation. But waiting on God doesn't mean doing nothing. God has already told us what is good: Do justice, love mercy and walk humbly with God in community.

Pastor Sandy Larson joined us for the second in our Economic Justice and Scripture series. In her sermon she brings ancient commandments into a contemporary context, encouraging her listeners to be re-programed with this old code. It is still relevant to pay the hired laborer fairly and to treat the immigrant in our land with equity and respect. “The world needs a love that is troubled by injustice.”

We begin our worship series on Economic Justice with God’s instruction to the community of Isreal: Every seven years you must cancel all debts. God gave the people the gift of freedom from accumulate debt and from accumulated wealth. This community economy that re-set itself in a regular cycle is an example of how we, even as we live within a system that depends upon indebtedness, can also build economies of trust and generosity.

In this last in our Creation Care series, Pastor Amy talks about the people and communities who are already doing inspiring work in connecting their passions to the work of restoration. In Ezekiel's vision, he sees a tiny trickle of water becoming a mighty river that brings life to even the most barren and lifeless places. That river begins in the heart of the temple. Each of us can be like that small rivulet that join with others in community, acting together out of love for God and the earth, to become the River of Life.

When we try to take too much from the earth, the earth will stop offering anything to take. In what is basically a book report on Louise Erdrich's /The Mighty Red/ and chapter 29 of Leviticus, Pr Amy talks about how God's law of liberation reminds the community that the land too is included in covenant. The earth too shall receive a sabbath.
