Kirkland Interfaith Network has learned of two Afghan families who were resettled in Kirkland after evacuation from the Kabul airport in September. Since that time, St. John Vianney Catholic Church has played an important part in organizing material support as well as a team of dedicated volunteers to help these families. The journey to a new life is long and difficult, and one significant obstacle is finding and funding affordable housing for the families beginning on August 1. KIN is using some of our general funds to get this started, by matching donations (up to a total of $3000) that are made to KIN by members of our congregations and others in the community. If you would like to contribute to this effort, please make a donation at https://www.kirklandinterfaith.net/donate and note “Afghan refugee support.” Funds raised that are so designated will be used exclusively to support Afghan refugees, which may include others beyond these two initial families. KIN is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization and qualifies for most employer matching gift programs. Please share this post with others!

Imagine Housing is in need of volunteers to assist residents at our 30 Bellevue site who might need a little extra help with groceries, strollers, etc. while our property staff work to fix the elevator that has been down. We hope to resolve this situation quickly, but it won’t be soon enough as our residents need support right away. This is the new apartment community behind St. Luke’s Church (3030 Bellevue Way NE). We are looking for strong and empathetic adults to fill two 2-hour shifts Monday thru Friday until the elevator is operational. The shifts we are trying to fill are from 11-1pm and 1pm-3pm.

Volunteers must have a genuine interest in supporting affordable housing and low-income residents; be at least 18 years old; be able to lift up to 50+lbs safely or be comfortable asking for help with larger items from staff; attend a required web based orientation; wear personal protective equipment including a face mask and gloves (provided by Imagine Housing); and pass a criminal background check.

To apply, visit http://www.imaginehousing.org and fill out our volunteer interest form, and one of our team will contact you. If you have questions, please email [email protected].

PANELISTS: Jim Lopez, Assistant City Manager City of Kirkland; Rev. Michael Anderson, Pastor, Holy Spirit of Lutheran Church; Kendra Petkau, Kirkland Nourishing Network; Debra R. Baker, King County Public Health; Shannon Harris, King County Public Health

James (Jim) Lopez is the Assistant City Manager for the City of Kirkland where he oversees the city’s civic engagement, communications and economic development programs. Prior to his current role, Jim was responsible for the administration of the city’s self-insured health plan and he is one of the architects of the Consumer Driven Medical Home model of care. Before coming to Kirkland, Jim served as Senior Advisor to Deputy Secretary Ron Sims at the Department of Housing and Urban Development in Washington DC. Prior to his time at HUD, Jim served as Deputy Chief of Staff to King County Executive Sims.

For the past three decades Michael Anderson has been pastor at Holy Spirit Lutheran Church located just two blocks from Life Care Center where he would regularly visit patients. Recently, he has been helping to lead his congregation to cope with all the difficulties and opportunities the pandemic had presented to all of us.

Kendra Petkau has lived on the Eastside for fifteen years with her husband and two sons, now in middle and high school. She was a Kirkland Nourishing Network food box donor at the North Kirkland location for several years before establishing an additional location in 2014 to serve schools in South Kirkland. Kendra enjoys working with KNN donors and volunteers to help meet the needs of food-insecure students and their families.

Debra R. Baker is an Organizational Development Practitioner with King County Human Resources. She was reassigned to King County Public Health to set-up and lead Speakers Bureau, which is part of the COVID-19 Community Mitigation Branch.

Shannon Harris has served in King County Government in various capacities. She is currently working in the COVID-19 Community Mitigation Branch in King County Public Health, where she is a co-lead in the Business Task Force.

The panel discussion and Q&A will be moderated by Jawad Khaki, President of Ithna‐asheri Muslim Association of the Northwest (IMAN).

Dear Kirkland Angels,

Normally at this time, Kirkland Nourishing Network would be asking for your help in providing boxes of groceries before Spring Break for Kirkland children and families in need. But with the current concerns for social distancing, keeping people healthy, and possible school shut downs, doing a person-to-person food drive would be really challenging. However, these families need our help more than ever. We think we can overcome the current limitations on gatherings and still help our neighbors.

So, here’s our plan. We will purchase Safeway gift cards for school counselors to distribute to the families they have identified. We have already received a generous donation from the Kirkland Kiwanis Club to get things started! With you and your neighbors’ support, we can provide a $50 grocery gift card to each family that needs one. This will provide vital support through the nine-day Spring Break when children are not receiving their breakfast and lunch at school. Families can shop for what they need most, at a time convenient for them.

All the information you need to make Kirkland Nourishing Network work is on the website.

Kirkland has stepped up to help our neighbors in need at every school break for the past 8 years. The key thing you need to keep in mind is that you are making a real difference in the lives of our Kirkland neighbors. Some neighbors struggle more than we realize; but, together, we can help.

It is easy to get started, just click on the web address and you’ll see the link for donating towards a gift card:

Bless you for your participation.
