Trinity United Methodist Church (Kansas City, MO)

Trinity United Methodist Church (Kansas City, MO) We worship on Sundays at 10:30am in person and online. The history of Trinity has been one of courage, inclusiveness, and faith.

Rooted in the vision of Beloved Community, we celebrate belonging in all its forms—welcoming people of every race, generation, sexual orientation, and walk of life into the heart of our church. We believe all persons regardless of their age, race, sexual orientation, gender, socioeconomic position, challenging condition, or lifestyle are valued equally in the eyes of God and in the life of Trinity

UMC. In 1916, the Howard Memorial Church, located at the Southwest corner of Linwood and Charlotte, and the Hyde Park Church at the corner of Valentine and Broadway, merged, desiring a larger and more beautiful facility. The natural union gave birth to Trinity on July 9, 1916. As we recently passed our 100th birthday, we continue to be a community of diverse people who work together to study, pray, preach and act the love of God and Christ.

Beginning in September, we're going to spend several weeks talking about this mysterious, beautiful, messy, complicated book we call the Bible. I've touched on this subject from time to time over the years, but I want us to go a little deeper.

For one thing, several people in our community have shared with me that they have struggled to return to the Bible because of what they were taught growing up. Some are trying to deconstruct difficult or harmful interpretations while also figuring out what faith looks like in today's world.

At the same time, we are living in a moment when the Bible is being weaponized more than ever. Scripture is frequently used to justify exclusion, division, and harm. So many things are being said in the name of God that seem to produce fear rather than love, exclusion rather than belonging, and harm rather than human flourishing. I want us to talk about that.

But perhaps most importantly, I love the Bible. I believe Scripture can still surprise us, challenge us, comfort us, unsettle us, and draw us more deeply into the life and love of God. My hope is that over these weeks, we can learn to open the Bible with fresh eyes and a renewed sense of curiosity—not as a weapon, but as a story that continues to invite us into God's work of transformation and flourishing.

To help me prepare for this series, would you take a few minutes to complete the short survey below? Your responses will be completely anonymous, and will help shape our conversations in September. I’m looking forward to beginning this conversation with you.

As a new school year begins, we’re praying for all our students, teachers, school staff, and families for patience, courage, curiosity, good friends, and plenty of grace for the year ahead. May our schools be places where every person feels safe, welcomed, valued, and loved.

And in honor of Back to School Week, we thought we’d share a few pictures of our Trinity staff and leadership back when we were students ourselves. Some things have changed. Some hairstyles should probably stay in the past. And somehow, we all survived school!

Join us in praying for our students, teachers, and families as they begin a new year.

As many of you know, we have been dealing with some significant issues with the air conditioning in our sanctuary over the last couple of weeks. We had hoped it would be repaired by now, but unfortunately, that is not the case. We will not have AC in the sanctuary this Sunday.

I know. I know. It’s August in Kansas City, and apparently the Holy Spirit is not the only thing bringing the heat. We are still working to get a better sense of exactly how long it will take to repair the system. In the meantime, we’ll have fans going in the sanctuary, hand-held fans for you, and we’ll do everything we can to make worship as comfortable as possible. If you need to step out of the sanctuary for a few minutes to cool off, feel free to go into the Parlor, where we'll have the livestream playing!

And Trinity, we can do this. We’ve worshiped through storms. We’ve worshiped through uncertainty. We’ve worshiped through seasons when things didn’t go according to plan. So tomorrow, we’ll gather together, we’ll sweat together, we’ll laugh together, and most importantly, we’ll worship together.

See you at 10:30am, in person or online!

Trinity,

Today is Election Day here in Kansas and Missouri. As people of faith, we remember that every person is created in the image of God. Every voice matters. Every story matters. Every neighbor matters. Voting is one way we live out our call to love our neighbors and help build a more just, compassionate, and faithful community.

Our democracy is stronger when we all show up. When we listen. When we engage. When every voice has the opportunity to be heard. The power is in your hands--not to control everything, but to help shape the future we share. So today, use your voice. Cast your vote. Encourage your neighbors to do the same. Vote.
