God doesn't just tell his people how to treat foreigners. He appeals to something they already know from experience.

"You must not oppress foreigners. You know what it's like to be a foreigner, for you yourselves were once foreigners in the land of Egypt." (Exodus 23:9, NLT) This isn't simply a rule to follow. It's a reminder of a memory his people actually carry, the felt experience of being outsiders themselves.

It would be one thing to be told to treat foreigners well simply because it's the law. It's another to be reminded that you already know what that experience feels like from the inside. Empathy, not just obligation, is the foundation of this command.

For those of us building community with immigrants and refugees, that's worth remembering. Real welcome doesn't come from following a policy. It comes from genuinely trying to understand what it's like to be new, unsure, and far from home, and letting that understanding shape real friendship and hospitality.

This week, think of a time you felt like an outsider, even briefly, and let that memory move you toward welcoming someone from all places who's living that feeling right now.

Take a look at what happens when 40 people trade their normal weekend for lake views, shared meals, and honest conversation about the storms we're all walking through.

We recently headed to Branson for our church retreat, staying right on Table Rock Lake with an indoor pool and an incredible outdoor deck where a lot of our best conversations happened. We cooked our own meals together, which sounds small, but there's something about chopping vegetables and setting a table side by side that builds community in a way nothing else quite does.

Our theme for the weekend was God's Peace in the Middle of Storms, grounded in the moment Jesus calms the storm with the disciples in the boat. It's a familiar story, but we spent real time sitting with the question underneath it: does it sometimes feel like Jesus is asleep during your storm? What is your storm right now? And do we actually believe he has the power to calm it?

Those questions led to some of the deepest conversations of the whole weekend. We laughed a lot, shared honestly, and grew closer as a church family. And in the middle of it all, we got to celebrate two of our own, Erika and Gabriel, as they were baptized, publicly declaring their faith in front of the community that's walked with them.

Community. Deep relationships. A whole lot of fun. And two new brothers and sisters in Christ. We're so grateful for this weekend and for every person who was part of it.

We believe effective ministry is relational at its core. When relationships are interdependent, learning is mutual, serving is reciprocal, and friendship is life-giving. That's the heart behind every volunteer opportunity we offer.

Whether you have an hour a week or a whole season to give, there's a place for you here:

✔️ Kids Adelante — Thursday nights, large group games and small group Bible studies for neighborhood kids
✔️ Leaders-In-Training — Monday and Wednesday afternoons, mentoring and tutoring for up to 20 kids each year
✔️ Arts Community — Monday nights, teaching guitar, piano, arts and crafts, and more
✔️ Adelante Youth Club — Wednesday nights, relational gatherings and discipleship for teens
✔️ Leadership Training Project — One afternoon a week during the school year, investing deeply in young leaders
✔️ Summer Youth Internship — Full-time summer discipleship and leadership development for motivated youth
✔️ English Classes — Monday nights for refugees, Thursday nights for Spanish speakers, building friendship through conversation
✔️ Citizenship Classes — Tuesday nights, helping neighbors prepare for the USCIS exam and interview
✔️ Adelante Thrift — Service opportunities six days a week, from sorting to helping customers
✔️ Backpacks — Summer, seasonal opportunities to assemble and donate school supplies for local kids

No experience needed for most roles, just a willingness to show up and build real relationships. Every new volunteer starts with Volunteer Orientation (September 12th from 9 am - 12:30 pm), where you'll learn our story, our vision, and get trained for the program you're joining.

This summer, our Citizenship Program grew in ways we're so grateful for. We opened a new morning class schedule, added a third level to our evening classes, and celebrated Parlad Biswa becoming the first student from our 2026 classes to pass his citizenship test.
