America's Greatest Need: A Return to God
Text: 2 Chronicles 7:14; Romans 13:1-7; Matthew 5:13-16
Introduction
Today we remember September 11, 2001.
For many of us, it feels like yesterday. We remember the smoke rising from New York City. We remember the Pentagon burning. We remember passengers aboard Flight 93 making the ultimate sacrifice. We remember first responders rushing into danger while everyone else was running out.
On that day, America was wounded. Families lost loved ones. Children lost parents. Husbands lost wives. Wives lost husbands. The nation mourned together.
But something else happened in the days that followed.
Churches filled up. Prayer meetings were crowded. Flags were displayed everywhere. Americans stood together. Political differences seemed less important. People helped one another. We were reminded that we were one nation under God.
Yet as the years have passed, much of that spirit has disappeared. Patriotism has declined. Respect for authority has declined. Love for neighbor has declined. Even more concerning, reverence for God has declined.
The real crisis in America is not political. It is spiritual.
The greatest threat to America is not from enemies outside our borders. The greatest threat is that we are forgetting the God who has blessed us.
Why Nations Decline
Throughout history, nations rise and fall.
The Bible repeatedly teaches that when people honor God, they experience blessing. When they reject God, they experience consequences.
Proverbs 14:34 says:
"Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people."
A nation is not weakened first by foreign enemies. It is weakened when its moral foundations crumble.
When truth is abandoned, confusion follows.
When families break down, society suffers.
When people become lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God, spiritual darkness spreads.
When churches stop preaching repentance and start preaching comfort without conviction, people become spiritually asleep.
This is exactly what we are witnessing today.
We have more technology than ever before, but less peace.
More wealth than many generations before us, but less contentment.
More entertainment than ever, but greater loneliness.
Why?
Because humanity was created for God.
No amount of success, money, power, politics, or pleasure can fill a heart that was made for fellowship with its Creator.
Why We Need God
Many people ask, "Why do I need God?"
The answer is simple.
We need God because He created us.
Colossians 1:16 tells us that all things were created by Him and for Him.
Life only makes sense when we understand the One who made us.
A fish cannot survive outside the water because it was created for the water.
Likewise, people cannot truly thrive apart from God because we were created for Him.
Without God, there is no absolute standard for right and wrong.
Without God, morality becomes whatever culture decides it should be.
Without God, truth becomes relative.
Without God, life loses its eternal purpose.
God is not merely helpful. God is essential.
Every breath we take is a gift from Him.
Every blessing comes from Him.
Every day of life is sustained by Him.
The question is not whether we need God.
The question is whether we are willing to acknowledge that we need Him.
The Reality of Sin
One of the greatest problems in America today is that many people no longer believe sin is a serious issue.
The Bible says something very different.
Romans 3:23 says:
"For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God."
Notice that it says all.
Not some.
Not only criminals.
Not only corrupt politicians.
Not only people we disagree with.
All have sinned.
Sin is not merely making mistakes.
Sin is rebellion against God.
Sin is choosing our way over God's way.
Sin is pride.
Sin is selfishness.
Sin is dishonesty.
Sin is lust.
Sin is greed.
Sin is hatred.
Sin is refusing to submit to God.
The reason America has problems is because Americans have problems.
The reason society is broken is because people are broken.
Every social problem ultimately traces back to the reality of sin.
The human heart is the battlefield.
Before America can change, hearts must change.
Before communities can change, individuals must change.
Before a nation can repent, people must repent.
Why Repentance Is Necessary
The word "repent" is not popular today.
Yet it was central to the preaching of Jesus.
When Jesus began His ministry, His message was:
"Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."
Repentance means a change of mind that results in a change of direction.
It means agreeing with God about our sin.
It means turning away from sin and turning toward Christ.
Many people want God's blessings without repentance.
They want peace without surrender.
They want heaven without holiness.
They want forgiveness without confession.
But God's Word teaches that real spiritual renewal begins when people humble themselves before Him.
2 Chronicles 7:14 says:
"If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways..."
Notice the order.
Humility.
Prayer.
Seeking God.
Turning from sin.
Then comes healing.
God does not call us to fix everyone else first.
He calls us to examine ourselves.
Revival does not begin in Washington.
Revival begins in the church.
Revival begins in our homes.
Revival begins in our hearts.
What Does Real Patriotism Look Like?
Patriotism is not merely flying a flag.
Patriotism is not merely singing the national anthem.
Patriotism is not merely celebrating national holidays.
Those things have value, but biblical patriotism goes deeper.
True patriotism desires God's best for the nation.
It means praying for our leaders whether we voted for them or not.
It means being honest citizens.
It means serving our communities.
It means loving our neighbors.
It means standing for truth even when it is unpopular.
It means being salt and light in a dark world.
The greatest thing a Christian can do for America is not simply complain about what is wrong.
The greatest thing a Christian can do is live faithfully before God.
A nation does not change because of louder arguments.
A nation changes because transformed people influence the culture around them.
How Can America Return to God?
1. We Must Return to Prayer
Prayer acknowledges our dependence upon God.
We need families that pray together.
Churches that pray together.
Communities that pray together.
A nation on its knees is stronger than a nation relying solely on its own strength.
2. We Must Return to God's Word
We cannot follow a God we do not know.
The Bible is not outdated.
It is God's truth for every generation.
When Scripture is ignored, confusion grows.
When Scripture is followed, wisdom increases.
3. We Must Return to Biblical Morality
God's standards do not change.
Culture changes.
Opinions change.
Politics change.
God's truth remains the same.
Christians must lovingly but courageously stand for what God has declared to be right.
4. We Must Return to Evangelism
America does not primarily need better politics.
America needs Jesus.
Every changed life begins with the Gospel.
Lost people need to hear about the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ.
The hope of America is not found in any political party.
The hope of America is found in the Savior.
5. We Must Return to Genuine Repentance
Revival has always begun with repentance.
When God's people humble themselves and turn back to Him, He moves powerfully.
The need today is not merely reform.
The need is revival.
Conclusion
As we remember 9/11, let us honor those who died, those who served, and those who sacrificed.
But let us also remember the lesson of those difficult days.
When tragedy struck, many people turned toward God.
The challenge before us today is this:
Will we wait for another crisis before we seek Him again?
Or will we choose now to humble ourselves, repent of our sins, and return to Christ?
America's greatest need is not a stronger economy, a stronger military, or a stronger government.
America's greatest need is a spiritual awakening.
The answer is the same today as it has always been:
Repent of sin.
Trust in Christ.
Follow God's Word.
Live faithfully.
Share the Gospel.
Pray for revival.
And may it be said again of our nation:
"Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord." (Psalm 33:12)
