Mini Devo: Put Off the Old, Put On the New
Scripture: Ephesians 4:17-32 (KJV)
Key Verse
“And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.” — Ephesians 4:32
Devotional Thought
Have you ever outgrown a favorite shirt or pair of shoes? There comes a time when you have to take off the old because it no longer fits who you are.
Paul tells believers that following Jesus means taking off the “old man”—the sinful habits, attitudes, and behaviors that once controlled us—and putting on the “new man,” which reflects Christ.
For teens, this can be difficult because the world constantly pressures you to fit in. Friends may gossip. Social media may encourage comparison and anger. Culture may tell you to do whatever feels good. But God calls you to something greater.
Paul gives some practical examples:
* Stop lying and tell the truth.
* Don’t let anger control you.
* Work hard and help others.
* Use words that build people up instead of tearing them down.
* Get rid of bitterness, wrath, and malice.
* Be kind, compassionate, and forgiving.
Following Jesus isn’t just about what you stop doing—it’s about becoming someone different. The Holy Spirit is working in you to make you more like Christ every day.
The question isn’t, “How close can I get to sin?” The question is, “How much can my life look like Jesus?”
Application
Ask yourself:
* Are my words building people up or tearing them down?
* Is there someone I need to forgive?
* What old habit or attitude do I need to give to God?
* Does my life look different because I follow Jesus?
Challenge
Today, choose one area from Ephesians 4:17-32 that you need to surrender to God. Pray and ask Him to help you take off the old and put on the new.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for saving me and making me a new creation. Help me put away sinful attitudes and actions. Fill me with kindness, truth, forgiveness, and love. Let my words and actions reflect Jesus so others can see You through me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Remember: You can’t wear the old life and the new life at the same time. Choose daily to put on Christ.
