Vindication is related to the virtue of justice, which seeks to ensure the fairness of human interaction. If we truly put our trust in God and seek to do His will, we may not always have popularity, but we will have truth.

Vindication, Explained!
Most commonly, we understand the term “vindication” in a very legal, argumentative context. We say someone is “vindicated” when they are proven innocent, or when their good name is defended from an accusation.

This isn’t so far from what vindication means in the sense of virtue, either. Vindication is related to the virtue of justice, which demands we honor our duty to God and to one another. Justice seeks to ensure the fairness of human interaction. It seeks to safeguard truth against those who would co-opt it for their own purposes.

If we truly put our trust in God and seek to do His will, we may not always have popularity, but we will have truth: “Commit your way to the Lord, trust in him and he will act, and make your righteousness shine like the dawn, your justice like noonday.” (Psalm 37:5-6)

The schedule for Daily Masses at St. Athanasius and Winding Creek in Jesup will be different on Thursday and Friday this week. The Winding Creek Mass will be at 9:00 AM on Thursday, September 10, and the St. A’s School Mass will be at 8:30 AM on Friday, September 11. The daily Mass schedule will return to normal next week.

Virtuous zeal refers to an all-consuming love, which has for its object the Lord Himself. Closeness with God is impeded by anything contrary to the teachings of Jesus Christ, so no person can be “zealous” for God if they are violent or hateful.

Zeal, Explained!
Zeal gets a bad rap these days, as we most often hear this word associated with extremists whose adherence to a belief system leads them to violence. In Scripture, we hear Paul condemn those whose “zeal for God” lacks discernment (Romans 10:2), so we know this was a problem in ancient times as well.

But no one acting in violence or hatred is practicing virtuous zeal, which refers to an all-consuming love for the Lord: “Zeal for your house has consumed me,” writes the Psalmist (Psalm 69:10), referring to a religious devotion that has deprived him of all his worldly status.

If anyone’s “love” of God leads him to sin, he is not actually motivated by love of God. A burning and all-consuming love of God has, for its object, God Himself — and closeness with God is impeded by anything contrary to the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Help transform the foster care experience in the Cedar Valley by supporting Cedar Valley Angels over the next two weekends, September 5/6 and September 11/12. We are collecting items to put a little love into the "Love Box" program for local foster families. Requested items include paper towels, toilet paper, hand soap, hand sanitizer, fruit snacks, granola bars, small toys, and stuffed animals. A full list is available on the church bulletin board.
