Vision Series: Charting the Path Ahead

Why does a church need a vision? We have the Bible, isn’t that enough?

Well yes, the Bible is certainly enough! It’s a large collection of ancient writings that tell the story of God and His love for humanity. It’s incredibly compelling and filled with truths that transform our lives. Through it, God gives us His mission for us as believers. It serves as the foundation for all we do in church life. However, it’s not meant to be a step-by-step guide for how to carry out that mission.

It’s up to us as a local church to take the teachings found in the Bible and use them to form how we will accomplish our God-given purpose. We are called to be disciples and make disciples. That means being with Jesus, becoming like Jesus, and doing what Jesus did. So, where should we start?

Two years ago, I asked our church to go with me on a journey of creating our church vision. We established a Vision Team that met regularly for prayer and planning, and we were guided by Ed Rogers, a pastor and the founder of a group that helps churches and organizations with this sort of thing. After many months of work, our first detailed vision document was created.

Our vision statement is simple: “We are a community of restored hearts, renewed relationships and revived compassion.” Under each of those three main points are specific initiatives we have been working on as a church. However, we can’t do them all at once. One of the biggest projects we completed last year was our first ever spiritual growth retreat, which was an incredible day spent in worship, the Word and fellowship.

What will we focus on over the next year? That process begins now, as we revisit our vision over the next few weeks. Now that summer is ending and school will soon be back in session, it’s time for us to come together and seek God’s wisdom for what’s next. I’m asking you to commit to this three-week series, including being present and participating in the Sunday morning gatherings.

This is an exciting time to be at Pea Ridge. The future is bright!
