FIRST READING
Revelation 14:6–7

Then I saw another angel flying directly overhead, with an eternal gospel to proclaim to those who dwell on earth, to every nation and tribe and language and people. And he said with a loud voice, “Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come, and worship him who made heaven and earth, the sea and the springs of water.”

EPISTLE
Romans 3:19–28

Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.

But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it — the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? By a law of works? No, but by the law of faith. For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law.

GOSPEL
Matthew 11:12–19

[Jesus said:] “From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence, and the violent take it by force. For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John, and if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah who is to come. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

“But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to their playmates,

“‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.’

For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is justified by her deeds.”

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH
Reformation Day (Observed)
Oct. 25, 2026

In peace, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For the renewal of the Church in this and every age, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For us sinners, though we deserve only God’s righteous wrath and punishment, that for the sake of His Son, our Father would not remember our transgressions, but defend us from all harm and danger of body and soul, and be our very present help in time of need, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

In thanksgiving for Martin Luther and those who contended for the Gospel against many and great enemies; and that God would also make us bold to contend for the faith against those who would silence our voices or distract His people from the one true Gospel of the crucified and risen Christ, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For the faithful proclamation of Christ’s saving name, that God’s people may be strengthened in the true faith and His kingdom extended, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For our homes and families, that God would keep us in His Word and so make us truly His disciples, freed from errors and at peace; and especially for all fathers, that God would preserve and encourage them for their godly task to bring up children who fear Him, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For all people in need, that they would not fear though the earth gives way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea; and that they would trust in God and be comforted by His promise to be with them, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For all who commune, that in the worthy eating and drinking of the Sacrament they may have the certainty of forgiveness in Christ, who was set forth as the propitiation for our sins by His blood, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

Preserve Your Church, O Lord, and each of us as members of Christ’s Body, that we may not surrender the true Gospel for any reason, but be kept in this faith and fear throughout the days of our earthly pilgrimage, until that day when we and all Your people shall stand before the judgment seat of Christ to receive the reward You have prepared for us and all who have loved His appearing; through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

On earth is not his equal.

Soon were our loss effected;
But for us fights the valiant One,
Whom God Himself elected.
Ask ye, Who is this?

Isaiah 45:1–7

Thus says the Lord to his anointed, to Cyrus,
whose right hand I have grasped,
to subdue nations before him
and to loose the belts of kings,
to open doors before him
that gates may not be closed:
“I will go before you
and level the exalted places,
I will break in pieces the doors of bronze
and cut through the bars of iron,
I will give you the treasures of darkness
and the hoards in secret places,
that you may know that it is I, the Lord,
the God of Israel, who call you by your name.
For the sake of my servant Jacob,
and Israel my chosen,
I call you by your name,
I name you, though you do not know me.
I am the Lord, and there is no other,
besides me there is no God;
I equip you, though you do not know me,

EPISTLE
1 Thessalonians 1:1–10

Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy,

To the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:

Grace to you and peace.

We give thanks to God always for all of you, constantly mentioning you in our prayers, remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. For we know, brothers loved by God, that he has chosen you, because our gospel came to you not only in word, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction. You know what kind of men we proved to be among you for your sake. And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you received the word in much affliction, with the joy of the Holy Spirit, so that you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia. For not only has the word of the Lord sounded forth from you in Macedonia and Achaia, but your faith in God has gone forth everywhere, so that we need not say anything. For they themselves report concerning us the kind of reception we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come.

GOSPEL
Matthew 22:15–22

Then the Pharisees went and plotted how to entangle [Jesus] in his talk. And they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are true and teach the way of God truthfully, and you do not care about anyone’s opinion, for you are not swayed by appearances. Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, “Why put me to the test, you hypocrites? Show me the coin for the tax.” And they brought him a denarius. And Jesus said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” They said, “Caesar’s.” Then he said to them, “Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” When they heard it, they marveled. And they left him and went away.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH
Twenty-first Sunday after Pentecost (Proper 24A)

In peace, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For grace to await Jesus’ return amidst the scoffing and unbelief of this world; and for deliverance from the wrath to come, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For pastors, that by their proclamation, salvation may be delivered in power and in the Holy Spirit; and that faith and love would be increased in all who hear and hope would remain steadfast, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For fathers, mothers and their children, that the Lord who makes known His salvation from the rising of the sun to its setting may bless them in their stations and lead them to worship Him alone, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For all who lead, protect and care for us, that they may have wisdom, vigilance and compassion; and that we, in turn, may render gladly unto Caesar what is Caesar’s and unto God what is God’s, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For all who are afflicted, that God who made heaven and earth would preserve their lives, keep them from all evil and shade them from all harm, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For all who partake in this sacred meal, that we may rejoice in the forgiveness of sins, be strengthened in faith and proclaim Jesus’ death until He comes, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For all who mourn, that they may be assured that all who die in Christ will surely rise to eternal life on the Last Day, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

O Lord, grant that we may remain steadfast and immovable in faith, and that we may endure to the day of Christ’s coming. Reunite us with those who have gone before us and now rest from their labors, and grant that we may live in Your eternal presence and sing Your praise without end; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
