Sudan Church Partners Originally “Pax Dei for Nuba”, Developing Christ-Formed Leaders for Sudan’s Anglican Church

Bishop Andudu and the Anglican church in the Sudan Nuba Mountain region is asking the diocese of Christ Our Hope to join in prayer and fasting in relation to a recent outbreak of violence in the Nuba Mountains. The violence has caused major disruption and significant damage to various areas in both the Diocese of Kadugli and Heiban in the Nuba region. Local tribal conflict which escalated has also been exacerbated by recent drone strikes on humanitarian infrastructure. Bishop Andudu has been elected by regional religious and community leaders to lead a peace committee, which is guiding both prayer and relief efforts for all of those affected. Please join us in lifting up the situation and Bishop Andudu‘s efforts. He has specifically called to join other Sudanese and Anglicans around the world to pray and fast on Wednesday, May 27th from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Back in February, I got to witness an ordination and confirmation service in a region of the Nuba Mountains called Koalib. New churches are being planted there and so one of those churches hosted a service celebrating 2 new priests, 2 new lay readers (lay pastors), 5 new Mother's Union members, and some youth were confirmed. Christians make up about 10% of the Nuba Mountains, but the church is growing rapidly with many conversions and new churches being planted in unreached areas.

One thing that stood out to me at the service was the culture of celebration. This singing and dancing occurred right after the ordinations and would have gone on for a long time if it wasn't for a long schedule ahead. We can learn a lot from our Sudanese brothers and sisters and their contagious joy in the Lord!

These last few weeks we have heard such horrific news coming from Sudan. But as we received our updates out of the Nuba Mountains, this image of joy stood at to me as a profound message. As these ladies sing out and worship the Lord, embracing what he is doing in the midst of any trouble that comes, they are reminding us that God is working even in the midst of the worst trials we face.

This reminded me of Psalm 126:
"When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion, we were like those who dream. Our mouths were filled with laughter then, and our tongues with shouts of joy.
Then they said among the nations, “The Lord has done great things for them.” The Lord had done great things for us; we were joyful.

Restore our fortunes, Lord, like watercourses in the Negev. Those who sow in tears will reap with shouts of joy. Though one goes along weeping, carrying the bag of seed, he will surely come back with shouts of joy, carrying his sheaves."

We receive bi-weekly reports from our partners in the Anglican Diocese of Kadugli letting us know how things are going in the Nuba Mountains. Yesterday, we were devastated to hear about recent attacks in Nuba by the Sudanese government! The government tried to wipe out the Nuba people over a decades long bombing campaign, which thankfully mostly came to an end in 2019 when President Al-Bashir was removed from office. Pray for this horrific war which ramped up again in 2023 to end!

The diocese wrote to us: "The Diocese expresses deep concern over the recent tragic incident in which at least 45 people were killed [...] targeting civilians and students using military aircraft. This direct attack has created fear and instability, and it may affect Christmas celebrations and other church gatherings if the insecurity continues. We request earnest prayers for protection, comfort for the grieving families, and God’s peace over the entire region."

Thanks to Faith McDonnell from Katartismos for hosting an effort to raise awareness for Sudan on Capital Hill last week!...

Thanks to Faith McDonnell from Katartismos for hosting an effort to raise awareness for Sudan on Capital Hill last week! Sudan has been mostly off the international radar, but thankfully in the last few weeks we have had increased interest in the situation there and the ways the ongoing, horrific nightmare of the Sudanese civil war desperately needs our attention.

Senator Hawley (MO) and Congressman Moore (WV) have been working on advocacy for persecuted Christians in Nigeria and their offices were eager to have us share more with them about what is happening in Sudan, including the role of the church in caring for the Sudanese people. We also had a great coffee with retired Congressman Frank Wolfe who spent many years advocating for Sudan and South Sudan across party lines before his retirement.

After our meetings on the Hill, we headed to the American Christian Trust House for an evening gathering dedicated to intercessory prayer for the Sudanese church.

Thank you Faith for organizing this!

While we were there, we were encouraged to find out about this op-ed from Congressman French Hill (AR) and Commissioner Mohamed Elsanousi (US Commission on International Religious Freedom): https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2025/dec/3/trump-stop-sudan-violence-two-phone-calls/
