Reality Check

“…a great door for effective work has opened to me, and there are many who oppose me.” — 1 Corinthians 16:9

Leadership Lesson #1: Follow your passion and pursue your dreams, because there will always—always—be those who resist your progress.

It was that way for the Apostle Paul, and at some point in your career, it may very well be that way for you too.

Don’t be surprised by opposition. Sometimes resistance is simply part of walking through the open door.

Delight Yourself in the Lord

Psalm 37:3–7 (ESV)
“Trust in the LORD, and do good;
dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.

Delight yourself in the LORD,
and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Commit your way to the LORD;
trust in him, and he will act.
He will bring forth your righteousness as the light,
and your justice as the noonday.

Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him;
fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way,
over the man who carries out evil devices!”

Trust — Delight — Commit — Be Still.

These four words describe tremendous qualities in the life of a believer, and there is a beautiful progression among them.
We begin by trusting the Lord. We place our lives, our circumstances, and our future into His hands, believing that He knows what is best.

Then we delight ourselves in the Lord. This is my favorite! There ought to be joy in serving the Lord. Throw your whole heart into loving and serving Him, and enjoy the privilege of walking with God.

And here is something wonderful: as we delight ourselves in the Lord, He shapes the desires of our hearts so that we increasingly want what He wants. Then, in His goodness, He gives us the desires He has placed within us.

Next, we commit our way to the Lord—wholeheartedly and completely. We give Him our plans, our work, our ministry, and our future, trusting Him to lead the way.

Finally, we are still before the Lord. After we have trusted, delighted, and committed, we can leave the outcome with Him. We do not have to manipulate circumstances or worry about how everything will turn out. God is ultimately in sovereign control of the world, our lives, and our service for Him.

So today, my friend: Trust Him. Delight in Him. Commit your way to Him. Then be still and let God be God.

And may He give you the desires He has placed upon your heart—for His honor and for His glory.

Remember Me

Nehemiah 13:31
“Remember me with favor, O my God.”

This is the desire of many believers today. We want to know that our lives count for something. We desire God’s blessing and favor. We want Him to remember our faithfulness and the things we have done for Him and His Kingdom.

Four times in the book of Nehemiah, he asks God to “remember me.”

Each reference (5:19; 13:14; 13:22; 13:31) comes after something Nehemiah has done for the Lord’s people or the Lord’s work. In each case, he looks to God and asks Him to remember his faithful service.

Our verse today is especially significant because it is the final sentence of the book and, in a sense, brings Nehemiah’s story to a close.

Like Nehemiah, let’s faithfully do the work God places before us, trusting Him for the strength, wisdom, and favor we need to accomplish it.

Then, when our work is finished, may we be able to look back on a life of faithful service and make Nehemiah’s prayer our own:
“Remember me with favor, O my God.”

The Great Reversal

Nehemiah 13:2
“Our God, however, turned the curse into a blessing.”

That is just like our dear, sweet Lord, isn’t it? He has a wonderful way of turning the curses and difficulties of our lives into blessings. And He does not do this just once, but repeatedly throughout the course of our pilgrimage.

Our passage today refers to an incident involving Balaam, who was hired to curse Israel. Yet God intervened and turned the intended curse into a blessing (Deuteronomy 23:5). Reversing curses and difficult circumstances in our lives into blessings is no small miracle!

I wonder how many of us actually expect God to do this, or if we simply enjoy the blessing when it happens.

What difference might it make in our spiritual lives if we began to expect God to bring something good out of the difficult circumstances that come our way? Some people might call this optimism. Others might call it positive thinking. Perhaps we should simply call it...faith.

Believing that God truly has our best interests at heart can make life a great deal more hopeful and joyful. We are God’s children. He loves us. Christ died for us. He has forgiven us. So, when difficulties come, let’s believe that God can bring something good from them because He is working on our behalf.

Today, ask God to help you see the good He may be bringing out of a difficult situation. The curse does not have the final word. Our God is the God of the great reversal.

Joy Comes in the Morning

Psalm 30:5
“Weeping may endure for a night,
but joy comes in the morning.”

The Psalmist portrays weeping almost as a traveler who comes to stay for the night but is gone by morning. Sorrow may visit us, but it does not have to become a permanent resident.

Just as the sun faithfully rises after the darkness of night, God can bring joy again to the believer’s heart.

The emphasis of this verse is on the temporary nature of God’s judgment. Earlier in verse 5, the Lord’s anger is contrasted with His favor:

“For his anger lasts only a moment,
but his favor lasts a lifetime.”

His anger is temporary, but His favor endures. The night may seem long, but morning is coming.

Are you heavy-laden today with hardships and troubles that have left you in tears? Do as the Psalmist did: take your cares and concerns to our great Creator. Trust Him through the darkness, knowing that the night will not last forever.

In His time, God’s favor and blessing can awaken your heart like the dawn. Weeping may endure for the night, but joy comes in the morning!

May the Lord encourage you today to keep trusting Him until the morning comes.
