2 Peter 3:14-16
So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him. Bear in mind that our Lord’s patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him. He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction.

Commentary:
You cannot be at peace with God without receiving His grace. Forgiveness is offered to us, but we can only receive that forgiveness when we realize that we are in desperate need of it. Our “effort”, is to receive the grace of God. It is by grace through faith in Christ Jesus that we are saved, and it is through grace that the Holy Spirit makes His home with us, and that we become obedient to Him in confessing the gospel. You do not need to, and in truth cannot, prove yourself worthy of God’s gift of salvation. Jesus atoned for your sins. We have but to receive that gift and surrender to the transforming power of the Holy Spirit.

2 Timothy 2:24-26
And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. Opponents must be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will.

Commentary:
It is striking how often the truth of scripture points to the quality of our relationship with Jesus. This verse uses words like “quarrelsome”, “resentful”, and “gently instruct”. What is quarrelsome or gentle to some, may not be so to others. Part of being who we ought to be as “slaves” (NET) to Jesus is allowing ourselves to be led by the Holy Spirit. 1st Peter 3:15 says, “But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.” There is a responsibility of preparedness that I feel desperately unqualified to live out on a daily basis. Praise God that it is He who is granting “repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth”. You are never alone when speaking the truth in love.

Galatians 5:22-23
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

Commentary:
We are to be clothed with the characteristics listed in today’s scripture. No law or judgment has any place when these things are evidenced in our life daily. This is because these things are not generated by our self-discipline or by our own power. They are generated in us and evidenced in our lives by the power of God in us – The Holy Spirit. We make a decision to allow these fruits to be put on display for His glory. Consider today what you can put on display for the Lord. He is at work in you! Believe it.
