Trinity Sunday

Father, Son, Holy Spirit

•is the Trinity like an egg? Shell, white, yolk?
•is the Trinity like water? Solid, liquid, gas?
•is the Trinity like a shamrock? One leaf three petals?
All these definitions fall short. God is fully Father, fully Son,and fully Spirit. Maybe my mind will never fully understand. Maybe I should let my heart understand. After all, isn’t God, Love? Do we even have to measure love, or just know it’s there.
Today I can’t fully understand the Trinity. I’m not required to explain it. I can look around me. My neighbors, friends, family, even my enemies are all made in the image of God. I can seek community, forgive freely, and love generously. I can pour myself out to others. Like God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit pour themselves out to me.

Baptism and conformation.

Maxwell Emile Soupenne.
I think that not many people can remember their baptism. You are an exception. You’ll have this memory for the rest of your life.
You can be proud of yourself. Just like your family is proud of you. Just like this whole congregation is proud of you.

Pentecost Sunday

The birthday of the church.
After weeks of uncertainty following Christs death, resurrection and finally his ascension into heaven, the Holy Spirit came down upon the followers to Jesus. They heard a mighty roar as loud as a tornado. Then they saw what looked like tongues of fire on the peoples heads. The people gathered there, from many countries, could understand the word of God, spoken by the disciples in their own language. God was no longer distant. God was making his home inside all of us.

Pentecost

Next Sunday, the 24th, we celebrate Pentecost. This is a picture from a couple years ago. Hmmm there seems to be a theme. Everyone is wearing red. Red reminds us of the Holy Spirit, represented by tongues of flame, that came down upon the apostles. This marks the birth of the church.
Let’s all wear red again this coming Sunday.

Ascension Sunday

Happy Easter Everyone

Today we are wrapping up the Easter Season with ascension Sunday.
After Christ’s death and resurrection the disciples were in the upper room. They were afraid, not knowing what to do next. Then Jesus walked through the door. For forty days he stayed with them. He taught them. After forty days of learning, Jesus took them out to the mount of olives. There before the disciples he ascended into heaven. The disciples stood looking up in awe. Two angels in white appeared and said something like, yes, he’s up there, but you’re down here. Get to work.
When Jesus was here, we simply followed his lead. When he ascended into heaven, the responsibility shifted . . . To us. Jesus’s voice of comfort, his commitment to lifting up the lowly, his commitment to justice, shifts to us.
Friends, like the disciples long ago on Mount Olive, stop looking up to the heavens. Go out and get to work.

I will not leave you as orphans.

At the time Jesus was about to leave the disciples, they were worried. What will happen to us? Jesus says he will not leave you as orphans. The Father will send the spirit of truth. You will know I am with you and you are with me.
Today churches are worried. Will there be enough people? Will there be enough money? Will there be enough energy?
The church was never built on human confidence. It was built on divine companionship. Visit Rome today. The Roman Empire is gone, only ruins are left, but the gospel lives on. The spirit stays with us because God has a stubborn love, a persistent love. Christians are a people of stubborn hope, not shallow optimism.
Remember this; the promise of Jesus was not that life would be easy. The promise was his presence. He will be with us always.

Looks like a new group is forming.
I can remember, as a child, holding skeins of yarn in my hands so my mom could ball up the yarn.

•Devoted•
Today we heard the story of Stephen, the first Christian martyr. This isn’t a story of death, but rather a story of devotion. He is concentrating on God, and Jesus standing by his side. While Stephen was being stoned, he prayed, saying” lord Jesus, receive my soul”. Then he fell to his knees and said, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them”.
Stephens death, as tragic as it was, became a catalyst for what was to come. His death scattered the believers to all the ends of the earth.
Today how does this story affect us? We are called to keep our gaze on the kingdom of God. To not be distracted by things in the news, or the bullies of our age. When we feel the urge to react in anger, shift our gaze to Jesus instead.

•Koinonia
Christian fellowship, sharing, participation, contribution.
In the early church, people gathered in groups to share food and talk to each other. Learning about them and sharing yourself with them.
In the Greek Bible the word “Koinonia” appears many times. In the “New American Standard Bible“ it is translated as fellowship, sharing, participation and contribution. It is the bond uniting Christians as individuals and groups with each other and with Jesus Christ.
Today we are still called to be like the first century church. We’re called to be a people who are stubbornly devoted to each other because we are stubbornly loved by God.
May we be a people of the table, and may the Lord add to our numbers.
