Can We Trust AI? A Parish-Friendly Look at Accuracy

Artificial Intelligence has become part of everyday life, from the phone in your pocket to the websites we visit. But as many people have noticed, AI isn’t perfect. Sometimes it gives an answer that sounds confident… and turns out to be wrong. Why does that happen?

The simplest explanation is this: AI learns from the internet, and the internet is a mixed bag. When you ask a question—especially about something widely discussed, like a quote from Pope Francis—the AI looks for patterns it has seen before. And because the internet is full of paraphrases, summaries, memes, and the occasional made‑up quote, the AI may repeat something that isn’t accurate.

But here’s the good news: AI becomes far more reliable when we ask it to check its work. If you say, “Verify this using official Vatican sources,” the accuracy improves dramatically. Asking for citations, document names, or paragraph numbers helps too.

Think of AI as a helpful assistant: great at gathering information, summarizing, and explaining—but not a replacement for human judgment or the wisdom of the Church. Used wisely, AI can support our learning and ministry. It just needs the same thing we all need sometimes: a little guidance and a good fact‑check.

Virtue of the Week: Accountability

Accountability is the willingness to stand in responsibility for every choice. It is acting with integrity, doing what we say we will do. When we make a mistake, we do not seek to hide it or avoid it. We have the courage to face it willingly. We are open to the lessons it can bring, and ready to make amends. With accountability, people can rely on us because we own our actions. We are guided by our highest standards.

With summer vacation coming soon, how might a discussion about accountability benefit your household? How could additional tasks be delegated amongst all members? How do we encourage one another to follow through on choices?

Celebrating Diversity
"There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus." Galatians 3:28

What an appropriate bible verse as we start the month of June which has historically recognized Juneteenth Day and Pride Month.

Juneteenth, that is recognized each year on June 19, marks the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, in Galveston, Texas, General Granger announced that all slaves in Texas were freed. However, this day was not federally recognized until 2021! Today, parades and many events are held to celebrate freedom. If you are looking to get involved and celebrate locally, there are plenty of opportunities including the 55th Annual Festival and Parade on Dr. Martin Luther King Drive. Here is a link to the Milwaukee Juneteenth Day site for more information on how to get involved: https://www.juneteenthmilwaukee.com/.

Pride Month is also commemorated in June to celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community. The celebration of Pride Month in June stemmed from the Stonewall Riots that took place on June 28, 1969, in New York. The Stonewall Riots impacted the way that people advocated for LGBTQIA+ rights going forward! Today, many festivals and events are held throughout the month of June to celebrate diversity and honor the legacy of those who paved the paths for rights. If you are looking for a family-friendly event in Milwaukee, there is a MKE Pride Market day on June 13 which features LGBTQIA+ makers, artists and will have local food and entertainment.

As one family in Jesus, let us always honor the diversity in everyone!

Notes from Deb
And so are you!

Several years ago, Sister Mary Ellen Paulson OP was a parishioner here at OLOL. SME, as she liked to be called, has since gone on to her heavenly reward. When SME received Communion, the Eucharistic Minister would of course say, “The Body of Christ.” SME would answer, “And so are you.”

I have been thinking of Sister Mary Ellen and her response to the Eucharist as we celebrate The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi) this weekend. This solemnity dates back to the thirteenth century. At its heart, Corpus Christi is an invitation to contemplate the mystery of Christ’s presence in the Eucharist—a presence that nourishes our souls, strengthens our faith, and unites us as one body in Jesus Christ. As SME understood so well, it is also an invitation for us to live as a Eucharistic people. When we say “Amen” as we receive Communion, we are saying yes—not only to the doctrine of the Eucharist—we are saying yes to living as Jesus did, to taking in the body of his work, to consuming and being consumed by all that Jesus is. We are saying yes to being Christ’s body to the world—to be the hands and feet and voice and heart of Jesus to a world in need of love and goodness.

It is a joy to be a part of the Eucharistic community here at Our Lady of Lourdes. Thank you for all you do to be the Body of Christ for the world.

Deb Steppe
