Nelson Cole, born on November 19, 1824, holds the distinction of being our oldest recorded burial. He was laid to rest in Granite Hill Cemetery in 1882. Granite Hill Cemetery is home to so many beloved and unique souls, including Hosea Brown — our resident with the oldest date of birth, and possibly the longest life!
“Hosea was the son of Nehemiah Brown and Susannah Ward, born at Weston in Cheshire County, New Hampshire. He served as a Private in the 159th Reg't (Hecox's) of the New York Miltia in the WAR OF 1812.
He married Hester Smith (b. 1798, New York) and they had at least four children: Lotilda (b. 1818, New York) George W (b. 1825), Susanah (b. 1831) and Orr (b. 1849). After Hester's death in 1863, the family moved west, first to Worth County, Missouri and then Oregon where they settled in Josephine County.
Hosea Brown died at 105 years of age.
∼Osea Brown, a pensioner of the war of 1812, died near Grant's Pass, Ore., Tuesday, aged 105 years.”
