What do blood and water have to do with the Christian faith?
How are blood and water used in Scripture?
Where do blood and water combine in your life?

We're asking you to join us this Sunday as we explore the symbolism of blood and water in Scripture, church history, and the sacrament of the Lord's Supper. We'll celebrate holy Communion together following the message "By This You Will Know That I Am The Lord."

Sunday school begins at 9:00 a.m.
Worship begins at 10:00 a.m.

The first day of June is also the first day of our new mission statement. A group of 20+ members, working together over the past several months, has invested time, energy, and prayer into our "A Hope and A Future" process. During this time, they've learned about the biblical mission and purpose of the church, the history of the church, the postmodern world in which we live and do ministry, and who we are as a church (our identity and DNA). Through a process of creativity, cooperation, and discussion, we've decided on the following as our new mission statement for First United Methodist Church, Galax:

LOVING JESUS. SERVING OTHERS. MAKING DISCIPLES.

Every church is called to embody and prioritize five distinct areas of existence: worship, discipleship, missions, outreach, and fellowship.

Loving Jesus encapsulates the church's objectives of worship and fellowship.

Serving others encapsulates the church's objectives of outreach and missions.

Making disciples encapsulates the church's objective of discipleship.

We'll be organizing everything around this mission statement. It's the lens through which we'll evaluate and enact all that we do.

If you're a member of FUMC Galax but haven't attended in a while, why not reaffirm your membership and join us on this new path forward? If you're searching for a church home, we'd love to have the opportunity to receive and welcome you.

We use a call-and-response phrase from time to time in worship. It’s used by some of our brothers and sisters in Africa, and I’ll close with it:
I say the word “Hallalujah!”
You respond, “Amen!”

ACTS 3:1-5 (New International Version)
One day Peter and John were going up to the temple at the time of prayer—at three in the afternoon. 2 Now a man who was lame from birth was being carried to the temple gate called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg from those going into the temple courts. 3 When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for money. 4 Peter looked straight at him, as did John. Then Peter said, “Look at us!” 5 So the man gave them his attention, expecting to get something from them.

Peter and John’s first recorded encounter after Pentecost was with this lame man. His friends carried him to the temple gate so he could beg. This was a prime location since the man could count on worshipers (most likely) being generous as they entered to seek beneficence from God. But it’s entirely possible this man had never gone farther into the temple.
Lameness didn’t exclude someone from the temple, but it was probably frowned upon. After all, only the choicest, purest sacrificial animals were allowed. They couldn’t have blemishes or injuries. So, this beggar, while not prohibited from the temple, would probably have received dirty looks from the religious elite.
Peter looked straight at him, as did John. Then Peter said, “Look at us!” Why point this out? Because just like most of us, people passing by likely didn’t bother to look at the beggar. He was a regular fixture at the gate, yet it was easy for people to breeze by, ignoring him. So, when Peter and John spoke to him the man gave them his attention, expecting to get something from them.

How many of us overlook the poor, the needy, and destitute? It’s easy to do. We just pull out our phones and pretend to check messages. And just like that, we’ve avoided the beggar at the gate.
Would we act differently if we were filled with the Holy Spirit like Peter and John? We have the same Spirit they did. Are we afraid to be filled because of what proper church people might say? Guess what? As Acts 3 continues, we’ll see how the Holy Spirit messes up religion.
What would your church look like if you, or others, were filled like Peter and John? Why not find out.
